I am currently in school at my local Tech College obtaining my CDL,scheduled to graduate in 2 weeks.
I may be attending ROEHL orientation on March 6th.
What can I expect at orientation? I have read in other posts that only about 20% of the people at orientation move on to their training. What causes so many people to not even make it out of orientation???

First day is your road test and, physical, and drug test. Then some various paper work. The following two days are just company policies and what not. Most people don't make it because of physicals. High blood pressure or something else disqualifying comes up.
HwyPilot Thanks this. -
What can I expect from the road test? Is it basic stuff, or advanced? I will be fresh out of CDL school and will not be very expeienced. -
Its easy. You'll go out of the terminal, make some left turns, some right turns, lane changes.... don't worry about grinding gears, they understand. They want to see you make good choices. Then you'll do a 45 degree backing... you'll get a couple chances... don't worry, they know you're new and want you to pass. Just pay attention to everything.

My orientation was 5 people, 4 of whom made it through. Based on what I saw, for getting through orientation you really only need to know one thing:
The company van is not for personal use.

I am attending the driving school in February. What is the hotel like that they provide? Is it on company property? Any decent restaurants close by? Do they provide lunch or should I bring my own? Thanks.

Google the hotel.
It looks like a nice hotel. Look at the map page on the above link. To get to Roelh you would take a right then a left on 29th street and go about a mile. It will be on the right hand side you will not be able to miss it.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 22, 2009

its a 4 star hotel, internet, $108 a nite if not there for Roehl... they put all the drivers in one area, bring a suit for the pool/hottub to relax
they clean the rooms on fridays... no towels or soap bring yer own...HwyPilot and simpleinterest Thank this. -
Well, I'm leaving for orientation in Gary, IN today, I will try to keep everyone up to date on how things are going. Even if I don't get on as much as I would like I plan to keep notes on what I do during each step and I will post it when I get the chance.
I just want to say thanks to everyone that posted any information on Roehl and there experiences with the company, it has helped me alot to make this choice and I believe I have made a good one.HwyPilot and simpleinterest Thank this. -
Good luck...I think you will enjoy it. Jake is a good orientation guy, and Chris is a cool tester, if you happen to get those guys. The road test is really easy, don't sweat it at all.
Tip: if you can, try to get your Evo 2 trainer to get you routed to Marshfield for your testing out. It's a little tougher, but you're more likely to get a good truck. They refurbish them up in Marshfield. In Gary, they don't hardly have time to take care of PM, let alone refurbishing. I got an '04 FL Century...old I know, but runs like a top and has an APU and no problems. Couple people I know got their trucks in Gary and were '06 and '07 models with nothing but problems and just crap trucks in general, also didn't have APUs.
I'm in one of the few Centurys still running around. Say hey if we ever cross paths!Last edited by a moderator: Feb 8, 2009
