Driving speeds

    Thought I'm start a separate thread for this question..

    I've seen mentions on truck speed about company limits, triple digit trucks :biggrin_2554:, and such.
    It's easy to understand that companies are going to want to have loads delivered as fast as possible, as long as it doesn't cause accidents, violations, or other issues. And drivers are going to want to get in as many miles as possible while moving. So what's the norm, or expectations on speed...

    I'm curious about truckers' experience (or what they've heard from others) ... Say, even in a desert area with no limit, what if a person doesn't feel comfortable going over 75? And drivers want to avoid tickets (aside from the safety and comfort issue).
    As a new driver, I'm going to want to keep my speed where it can match my ability and driving record.

    It's my general opinion that speed contributes very little to overall average miles per week. 65 is comfortable speed to me and we'll probably see a change in the future where more and more companies want their drivers to drive 55 to 60. You won't see too many trucks driving 75 anymore other than expedite and owner operators.

    Odds are you'll end up with a company,as a new driver,with the truck's juevos cut off at 61-68mph so as long as that speed doesn't scare you I think you'll be ok =] A lot of the guys haulin it out there are bull wagons, reefers, and guys with too much money in their pockets.If they have that much cash to burn up in the fuel tank maybe they wouldn't mind making a charitable donation to the rest of our pockets lol

    I say go as fast as feel comfortable, here in Oz all rigs are speed limited to 60 mph (100 km) and the cops will book anyone for 2 mph over that. I drive from Perth Western Australia to Melbourne Victoria and back same as LA to NY City. I take generally 6 and a half days to do that, 3 trips a month with one week off. Across the Nallobour it is a long boring drive between road houses and a border crossing, its getting slower and slower every time. I think that inattention ( becomes mind numbing after a while) contributes more to crashes than speed. I now measure distances by DVD's which by watching is the only thing that keeps me alert :)

    Yeah the norm for most company trucks is between 62 and 65 or so. The only trucks your gonna find that arent governed are owner operators or really small outfits. But the only spots your gonna get away with 75 is certain areas where the speedlimit is 75 or so. Like across wyoming nebraska texas.

    I always like to go 70 mph in the summer months where legal. Until Fuel hit the roof. then i cut it back to 65. Its always nice to have a truck that will go past 65mph. With all the companys cutting it back its started to get jammed up more. Then you get idiots going the same speed then one goes a half mile and hr faster so he swings it on out to pass. 10 miles later he completes then pass then they hit a hill and trucker number 2 swings it on out to pass him back cuz hes lighter. You get the idea LOL its nice not to be restricted...

    If you're going to be a company driver don't worry you'll be clipped.

    O/O run where we feel the most comfortable, personally I like humming along at about 75 and yes I have a triple digit truck.

    When expedite trucks are assigned a load their ETA for delivery is figured on 55 m.p.h. avarage speed . A large percentage of expedite drivers are contracted to fleet owners . The drivers get 60% of the revenue but they pay for the fuel . They drive very conservatively .

    just go 63 and tell anyone who asks that you do it for fuel economy :)

    Thanks for all the info and advice -
    It sounds like I'll be able to drive comfortably, and have a good reason (fuel economy) if I'm ever asked. Thank god no triple digits will be required :+)
