    Hello,
My son Christian was born on 3/23/98 with a Clef Lip and Palet in Soldotna, Alaska. At the time I owned a franchise in the Western States Hockey League and my wife's pregnancy was well known in the community. When Christian was born, news spread rather quickly about his condition. A Shriner (and hockey fan) came to the hospital and told us about their program and let us know that the organazation would love for us to allow them to "Take Care of Christian" and his problem.

We transfered the club to another party and made our way to Florida. After a few visits with the local Shrine in Tampa, we were flown to Galveston to meet with Dr. Blackwell and the Clef Palet Project in Galveston. After that first meeting, they convinced us to go ahead with Christian's first surgery to close the lip, He was 12 weeks old.

Well, the procedure was an amazing success, as has been his care thru all these years....

In this picture, Christian is about 2, and you can still see his scar, but his palet is also closed.

Dr Blackwell and his team have done an amazing job, but Christian and more then 700 kids like him need YOUR help.

Hurricane Ike did great damage to the hospital in Galveston where these kids have been taken care of. The hospital has suspended operations and the future looks bleek at best.

There is a possibility that Dr. Blackwell, Dr Farliegh, and Leslie Hill may be able to work out of the Houston hospital instead.

Please help us to convince the Shriners to do this. My son and the other kids would benefit greatly with this plan.

Please take 10 minutes and call the Shriners Hdq in Tampa and extend your support to move the Glaveston Clef project to Houston.

Their number is easy to find by google... search "Shriners International Headquarters
2900 Rocky Point Dr. Tampa, FL"

    http://www.shrinershq.org/Hospitals/Main/

You could also find your local Shrine contact info on their site.

    Thank You,

    Hyper

Thanks for posting this. You are showing true compassion.

    BTW, Christian looks GREAT !!!

I'll be composing a note to my local Shriners, they have a good size contingency here.

A friend of mine was adopted by an American couple as a 3 year old. He's Vietnamese by birth and lost a leg in the bombing that killed the rest of his family. His parents took him to the Shriner's Hospital in Philadelphia, and he was monitored continually throughout his first 18 years and provided, as needed, care and prostheses free of charge.

Dave cannot say enough about the kindness and care given him by the Shriners. I hope everyone here offers their support for Hyper's request. I will.

The effort has paid off. Shriners Hospital is going to move both the Burn and Cleft Projects to the Hospital in Houston.

The folks did what I asked and CALLED the Hdqs today. Flooding the lines. I recieved a call from Douglas Maxwell (the head of the Shriners) a few minutes ago informing me of the plan that is now in place.

Would I do it again? Heck yea.

    Thanks Again,

    Stephen

Thanks for passing along the good news, Hyper! A program like this should not fade due to lack of a facility. They do so much for so many. :yes2557:
