Help me understand you would give another company 2/3 rds of your profit? Even at 90% of the take of a load - that's a really expensive mortgage payment and two car payments monthly. So why give it to another company?

I'm going to be the proverbial pia devil's advocate ... AGAIN ...

How are you SPENDING YOUR money under someone's authority when the money FLOWS from the customer to them to you?

Some people don't want to chase the money, they are content with capturing the revenue without having the additional hassles.

NOTHING wrong with that but those who think capturing that extra 5 to 15% is going to justify the time wasted trying to get someone to pay, have at it.

The 10 - 20 or 30 % you give to another carrier isn't saving you any time! It's adding time actually because your spending more money to make it back. You are working harder, not smarter

    People have answered your question.

Everyone's operation is different Everyone's goals are different. Everyone's life style is different. Everyone's overhead is different.

I figure by what you are posting that in a year or two you'll have maybe a hundred trucks and you'll have offices and warehouses and you can tell us all why doesn't everybody do that.

So when that happens you can come back and explain it to us. In the meantime some people do better with their own authority some people do better leased on.

And by the way, there are some small fleets that lease on also. They get better rates because they have multiple trucks and the company that they are leased to does a lot of the office work and dispatching so they need less staff and it's more profitable for them.

But I guess you can tell them why they're wrong too.

There is a psychological condition that some people cannot understand anyone's point of view but their own.

    I believe it's called narcissism.

Is it really narcissism?? So the overhead is different if you work for someone else VS working for yourself? I can totally agree if you wanted to be a driver for an LTL company. This line haul runs plus dock work equals a very generous pay. But why do they pay so well? Probably because LTL makes a lot of money because they have cross docks and 1, 2 and 3 day points in North America? Okay, so what happens if your a company driver for .50 CPM a mile and you exhaust your 70 hour rule eating out of a gas station? Or you own your own truck and drive up under someone else's authority that takes 20% of your gross? So, this is my question. If you are going to do trucking outside of working for an LTL carrier - I need help understanding why? Why not own your equipment, own your authority, be off when you want to be off, enjoy yourself, earn shipping accounts and not deal with brokers etc etc etc ... But yea I completely agree on the benefits for working with an LTL carrier as a company driver. Otherwise your only other option is DYI ... DO IT YOURSELF ;)

1.I get paid even if the company does not.
    2. Company I am leased to has excellent customers that I would in no way be able to supply them their shipping needs.
    3. Said customers pay well.
    4. If running under my own authority I’ll be paying a broker, lose that percentage anyway, maybe not but most guys with their own authority run the spot market and those rate fluctuate. I have access to locked in contracts.
    5. I don’t like paperwork, company takes care of all paperwork.
    6. My time is worth something to me, I chose to pay someone else to do paperwork, someone else with excellent customers.
    7. Did I mention excellent customer base?
    8. Fuel discount, volume discount that a one truck operator is not going to receive.
There are many benefits to being leased to a good carrier, as there are benefits to running under your own authority. If you believe there’s only one way to be successful in trucking you’re to narrow minded to succeed, remain a company driver and let someone else make the business decisions.
