I have to say, Limpy, your story is unique.
I started driving a truck 5 months after I got out of the Army back in 2002. I was seperated (Honorably) under AR 635-200 chapter 9. For anyone unfamiliar with chapter 9, it's "failure to rehabilitate; alcohol/drug addiction". Those words are on my DD 214. I have a RE-4 as a reenlistment code.
I had 4 pre-hires from the 4 applications I put in during driving school (Roehl, Arrow, FFE, Stevens). I went to work for Roehl, worked for a year, left and went to work for HOT worked for a year and a half and last year went to work for FedEx. All of them had a copy of my DD 214, none of them ever even asked me about my discharge. I went in fully expecting to have to see a therapist, maybe even get re-evaulated by a substance abuse counselor to clear myself of substance abuse diagnosis. Never had any of that, no company ever even asked me about it.
The FMCSA clearly states (at least it did when I got my cdl) you can not posess a CDL with a current dianosis of substance abuse. However, it doesn't define the word current. It was never an issue for me, as I never actually had a problem, and no one ever asked me about it. I guess it's just the example of things being done on a case-by-case basis.

It's always nice to read a possitive post.... I saw one guy get thrown out for snoring to much, I guess wrong MOS for that guy.
This Spring, we will all be buisyyyyLimpyLegs Thanks this. -
They sure didn't tell me about it.Since I don't and never have had a personality disorder could it be possible that I could request an upgrade to honorable and change the narrative reason for seperation on the basis that there was no briefing and perhaps that it could be falsifying the true nature of the discharge?

Sorry didn't mean to seem like I was jumping on ya,But I'm trying to get a lot of useful help from people who are willing to give it out but it's just frustrating because of people like gashauler who aren't even there to help but to constantly criticize...I've been trying my best to be patient to answer all his questions but he just keeps coming back at me with one crap remark after another.Last edited: Feb 13, 2009

The part that caught me was on page 382 of the green book right after the (9) that states:
FMCSA are a sly bunch they are...with their fancy wording. -
I'll bring the boo's who's got the dip?

A personality disorder will not stop you from getting a job in trucking.
If you're taking meds to control this disorder that affect your abilities to drive, it will.
If you have been diagnosed with violent tendencies, it will.
Being diagnosed, usually leads to getting your crazy check, if it's serious enough to affect your work. Otherwise, you're good to go.
You don't have to bring it up. You don't have to mention it at all.
No where on your USIS will it say.... "This guys a nut case"
Personality disorders range from a simple "tic" to delusional behavior.
A person who MUST clean his hands with a disinfectant, or he feels he is not clean enough....has a personality disorder. And you see 100's of those at truck stops. It doesn't mean they can't drive a truck.
I find it completely ridiculous this thread has gotten 3 pages long. Especially since I have been diagnosed with a "personality disorder" myself.
How did I get around it? I didn't tell the ^%#$6 about it. I don't take meds...it a simple diagnosis thrown out by a Doctor who recommended I take "marital counseling" with my ex wife, who in turn was told..I wasn't the one with problems...she was.
The bottom line is: Does it interfere with your ability to operate a truck in a safe manner?
If you don't have a "personality" disorder when you start driving a truck. You will within the first year.LimpyLegs Thanks this. -
Well it would have normally been a one page thread had certain sceptics not needed reassurance about every single little detail to answer an otherwise very simple question. While I appreciate the help given by the other members,I find it was more difficult than it had to be.

NOT TRUE.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49CFR391.21) require that all applicants wishing to drive a commercial vehicle list all
employment for the last three (3) years. In addition, if you have driven a commercial vehicle previously, you must provide employment
history for an additional seven (7) years for a total of ten (10) years. Any gaps in employment must be explained.

Here's where I get lost .....
I know the underlined parts are like taking things out of context.
But that doesn't read as a driver MUST supply a 10 year history to me. To me, it means he must provide record of any jobs he held during that period where he operated a commercial vehicle.
I know what companies want on the app. It just seems to me, they are requiring too much information from a new driver.
