Just think about whats more important in your life right now and that will help. Time home & crappy trucks or OTR road and maybe gone weeks or even months at a time. Something to think about... Good luck!

Haven't posted here since I was Hired by Nabors and turned the job down to stay with my present employer in the Auto Industry. I have made it another 6 months, but man, it is getting bad.

I also back during that time traveled to Hobbs New Mexico to visit with Plains Marketing. They hired me also but I had to wait on the Hazmat Clearence. I got cleared in Decemeber after about a 60 day wait but had a Ticket from 2003 that I had to pay by January 25th. (Small Citation that I got deferred in the court of dallas. But for some reason they said I was suppose to send them a copy of my MVR also. I didn'nt remember that so it cost me another 75.00)

Anyways I paid that and called Plains back just to check. In Hobbs they are now booked and wanted me to go to Pecas or Kermit to have a look. No Guarantees but I decided to not. There is nothing out there.

I am hanging on with what I got, but if it doesn't change from what I have seeked out there, the choices are far and few of really would enjoy the work.. between. Maybe I should of took the Nabors Job. I just couldn't see working 12 hours a day and pay for your Insurnace, and also not guaranteed the 12 too, when what I have at just getting 3 days was the same.

But the 3 days are getting regular and I am # 14 out of 42 in my comapny after losing 2400 Nation Wide and at one time we had 100 in just our terminal.

I even thought about going back out on the road but after hauling Cars for 12 years with a Union Company, I am finding that their is a freeze and the excusses are flying to cover the Freezes... Good Luck to all..

If it's news to anyone that there is a slowdown, particularly in the Barnett Shale, then you haven't been paying attention for the last few months.

The Barnett Shale has been struck by several factors at once, leading to a slowdown in drilling. First, the price of natural gas dropped from around $13 per MCF around June to around half that when the slowdown was first realized (it's currently around $4 per MCF, I believe). However, that drop didn't slow anything down, leasing was still going fast and furious with $30,000 an acre signing bonuses.

Then the credit crunch came, and that hit Chesapeake particularly hard. Their business model involved dealing largely off of credit, so they began to scale back greatly. Chesapeake has always been aggressive, either all in or all out. When they started to slow down their leasing, the other companies realized they were generally bidding only against Chesapeake, so this is where the slowdown began. However, at the time, XTO and others said they didn't plan to stack any rigs, as their business models allow them to spend from cash flow, not credit.

Then we "officially" entered a recession. During a recession, less energy is consumed. Things were now slowing down, but, hey, oil is going for $120 a barrel, which makes the future of natural gas look bright. Overinflated oil prices cause natural gas to be used instead of oil for power generation and things like that.

Then the price of oil fell through the floor.

Couple all these issues with the fact that the oil field always slows down in December and doesn't pick up until mid to late January and add in that the peak production of the Barnett Shale was expected to come sometime in 2009 or 2010 even if the economy had remained the way it was, and you've got a lot of things working against the Barnett Shale.

The sky isn't falling, this is just the nature of the beast. Chesapeake's stacked a bunch of rigs, XTO plans to stack a few. Devon, based on the last statements I read, don't plan on stacking any in 2009.

This is the oilfield. Let the high times carry the low.

We've hired three hands in the last two weeks. Unfortunately, the company I work for doesn't know much of anything about hauling water.

you cant argue with experience, if a guy tells you not to go down that road, because its a dead end and it will be hell backing er up all the way, You really want to listen and figure another way around.

Bust was right on the nose, this thread is perfect for new guys to read and hopefully learn things are not what they seem, and listen to the guy thats been there.

Companies are still hiring in E Tx, you just have to look. I just left my job with Basic Energy Services yesterday and started a new one today dragging a rock bucket with a 379 doing pad construction and a lot of state contracts.

I know, I know. Leaving a job in a recession is ridiculous and I think so as well BUT, anyone who stayed there was out of their minds.

Piss tests, none company wide since November, too much money.

Truck maintenance, hang it up, costs too much money. Drive em till they break and then park em till we have more cash. (I had two complete brake failures in the last 4 months, NEVER had an incident prior to that and I am surprised I didn't hit anyone/thing on the second one)

Pay? Forget raises, try pay cuts. Anytime we were not under load they cut 25% of our pay.

Truck breaks down? Cut 25% of your pay (look at the no more maintenance money part, then do the math..... breakdowns consisted of 3-4 hours a week).

Pretrip?? Nope, don't have time, you aren't making the company money that way. If you want to do a PTI, come in prior to clocking in and do it then but you aren't doing it on company time (seriously, he said this).

I could go on but you get the picture. I plan to report everything that was done to everyone who will listen in the local government. It was endangering not only the drivers but everyone on the road to run a company this way. Last night when I turned in my uniforms and tools, the safety dept was on their way to a crash where a driver hit the brakes and nothing was there, he plowed through another car in an intersection.

I found a lot of options with a lot of oilfield companies, McKnight Contruction, Nabors, Shale, Pinnergy, and a few others but I went back to tiny. I have a friend from HS with 3 Pete's and rock buckets. He has a good relationship with several companies for pad contructions (Sandridge, NFR, and a few jobs for XTO) plus numerous highway contracts with the state so he hasn't slowed down at all. I lost my medical insurance which sucks but I got a hell of a raise so I guess it "evens" out and the main thing, I don't have to worry about killing someone due to the sheer idiocy of those in charge trying to earn a bigger bonus by "saving the company money in hard times". We will see how much they save after the lawsuit the guy that got hit last night files.

We even had 3 mechanics quit because they said they wouldn't put their names on the repairs the company wanted done to "make it through".
