When you boil all the fat off the bone you are left with two kinds of drive away operations. There are the union operations (forwarding company's) that operate out of most truck assembly plants or the drive away operations that pay a set per mile pay and you deliver truck and pay all the expenses including fuel. The forwarding company's can be a great place to work but in almost every case you are the one un-decking the trucks regardless of the weather and you MUST have a class A CDL. The latter makes sense with people that are retired or or people like Greyhound Local Board drivers that can ride Greyhound for free. In almost every case you can do these runs with a class B CDL. There are many people that do drive away work and enjoy it. However beware of the pitfalls of these operations. Carriers like Bennett etc it is important to remember the only people making good money are owners and agents. When I am asked about drive away I always advise against doing it. Back in 2016 I advised a girl that asked me about doing this to not do so. She went ahead and did it anyway. About 2 months later she called me crying in Phoenix broke sitting at the bus station trying to get home. The company abandoned her. I got her home and helped get her into a local job here in Norfolk. Just saying!!!
tscottme Thanks this. -
I will pm when I have more posts, I reckon. Having just joined I have to wait a bit.
Signed up for driveway with a company. So far it appears that they are much like a lot of courier companies - they want me to pay to deliver their goods, while they get paid by the consignee.
Also, discovered that their concern is more for the load than the driver, or they might have told me that I couldn't deliver a vehicle until the weekend was over, and would have to spend an extra night/day not traveling, not getting paid, etc. I suppose they rightly figured I would decline the opportunity.
The 2016 is a wrap! thread was depressing, unless you just want to make a little road money while traveling randomly to other people's agendas.
Met a guy from Mamo who said his per mile was less (so far looks like ~40 cpm goes to gasoline, so neither I nor the 2016 is a wrap! guy actually make 84 cpm anyway) but he was reimbursed fuel, and they paid transport between trucks, and motels, maybe, sometimes? This sounds like far more than any reports I have seen on line for any drive-away company.
Pros - I can fit runs in around the rest of life and other businesses.
Cons - only money you make is the money you save, which is not really the point of labor. Now, if I could put a bike inside...
I don't yet have a CDL, and can't really put in a year OTR given family and other concerns at the moment. Just thought I'd try to get my feet wet on the idea.
Do any of these companies actually pay enough to make it worthwhile?
Thank you -

deathB4decaf could you message me info too? I tried to send you a message via the conversation system and also posted in this thread, but both messages disappeared.

I was breaking the rules so I am no longer allowed to message and if I advertise in this area for my company I will be banned from the forum. Sorry.

Understandable, I was wondering what happened. I'm certainly not trying to break the rules either, but my email is my username for this forum @gmail.com for anyone "else" that might have info
