    Active sonar sends out sounds and times the time and direction of the return sound (listens for an echo). Active is only used when something is thought to be close by, otherwise, they listen to the noise around them, which, as the article stated, is masked in some conditions.


    Another reason active sonar isn't used as much is that animals in the water have been shown to be affected by it.

    Good news is that one is from Britain and the other from France, doubt that they will bring the search across the pond.

    I'd be guessing that the 'ears'(sonar men) have had their precious hearing blasted with some new words that had never been said of them before.

    Hmm, first satellites collide, now submarines are smashing into each other. What's next? Sailboats? Is it only things that start with 'S'?
