I'm a 25 year veteran driver, in 2010 I was off on a serious medical leave. I should have known, but, for arguments sake didn't know. So, when I went to renew, I was told I had to downgrade, I didn't feel I could pass a dot physical. Now, I've gotten better and my physical therapy program is going well. I have diesel in my blood and wanna do something okay, I find out I've gotta retest and I don't have access to a truck so all the tech schools that offer a walk in test only wanna sell me a course. What?? Yeah, I could teach any course I've been studying that test that was designed to satisfy the extreme rookie, back to business here, I see that you can kill someone and not loose your privilege and I wasn't suspended and I was in good standing. I'll be ready for the end of September 2018 or early 2018 if your planning on being in east central Alabama thru that time or just email me, I'd rather pay you than a company looking to UP sale me their product. If you can be around or wanna meet at any CDL state facility and let me re acquire my class A.

Seriously I would check in the medical card requirement at DMV Where I live self certification means you walk in and show Medical card.I personally have been given a break in my car by an officer more than once when they see I have a CDL.Usually with a “You Ottawa know better”

Arkansas Grandfathered me so I could keep it for life if I wanted to. However when the law changed to require a medical card, I filled a tier two document to the state to keep the CDL without a medical card. After a period of time as a medical patient I turned in the CDL for a basic car license. If I was captured with DUI etc on medicines I take having a car license is less of a big deal than a CDL. I will not be medically able to drive again ever. Even if I was, chances are, there is no place for me.

Let it go means just that let it go. Gone. Poof.

Yeah, I wish jobs paid as good in 2014 and I wasn't so broken physically. Hell, all the replies so far are pertially correct but, this RETIREMENT isn't all it's cracked up to be, seriously.

It's never is. We used to joke that retirement is lethal. To sit around doing nothing then you die.

One of the first lessons we got in school from the old ones was that we have about 55 years or so in life to make good before the body breaks down under the work, in those days it was very physical. Well here I am mid 50's all out. I can also point towards the excessive regulating by Uncle Sam leveraging technology to keep us in line which introduces a whole set of problems beyond the scope of this industry.

One thing that has to stop is the constant shipping of entire orientation classes to medical. If the DOT medical long form or equivilant is no good to keep a valid license and they examine people all over again every week if need be then this whole system is a sham. I argue that the DOT medical is just as good as anything and should be honored by the company. And only send those who don't yet have one to physical.

Around here you can self certify as "Excepted Interstate" or "Excepted Intrastate". Both cover the same exceptions, one being driving for a volunteer fire dept as well as some farm operations. I've been retired for awhile now but am keeping my cdl, just in case.

I let my CDL class B go due to a loss of a leg but now I feel I could drive again with the automatic transmission...any reason why not...if I can get it back how would I go about it.

    Redo everything.

That is what I was told. They don't upgrade back to A on a whim. Once it's gone it's gone. If you want it back you have to go through everything.

The good news is you probably retain a large part of the knowledge, somewhat rusted from not being used over time. You will be getting into it easier than a flat newbie.
