Alot of companies have test tracks out in the desert. A friend of mine used to deliever fuel to GM test site and he told me it's like a government site and he had to sign a few papers to get into the site just to drop his load. They'd have new cars just sitting there to test the heat. They'd have their track going 24 hours a day. Anything you can think of they'd test the car or truck beyond it's capacity. It would be a great job. -
im seeing signs at gas stations saying 100% pure gas no ethanol, has there been problems or something with peoples cars ????

The higher the percentage of ethanol the lower your mpg .

10-4 thanks, that makes sense

It does lower your MPG and it's a huge pain in the b-tt for the oil companies. Ethanol is mandated by the EPA and it's all they have since MTBE was outlawed. The oil companies would give all they have for MTBE but there's just too many problems with that chemical getting down into the water table in a hurry. It was much better for your car but bad for drinking water.
Ethanol will mix with gasoline then it will seperate. Water is the major problem in using ethanol. It's extremely hard to ship by pipeline which the oil companies only want to do it that way. What happens is the ethanol is heavier than the gasoline and stays on the bottom when shipped. When the pipeline dips down there's always a chance to have a water pocket there. It's no problem when gasoline hits it because the gas will float on the top. But the ethanol will pick it up and if there's alot of water along the way the gasoline blend will become like a milkshake.
So none of the oil companies except a select few ship ethanol by pipe. It's either brought in by truck or railcar. My company had to build a spur track for the railcars because we just had too much product for trucks to bring it in. The oil companies that do refining made the MTBE since it's a petroleum product and they made money from that plus it blended with gasoline and had no water problems in the pipe.
If you see a sign 100% gasoline with no ethanol it would be the best you could buy for your vehicle. But I do believe there is some talk in DC to have all of the gasoline blended to 10% or more ethanol to save on fuel. I'll have to look for that one. Because the way it is now you'll only see ethanol in areas that can not meet the standards of the Clean Air Act. The companies can blend it if they want but I'm sure they only blend where they have to or it is cheaper. JUST besure the station is not trying to rip you off. You can smell the ethanol and you'll want to check out the pump for the proper stickers on that pump.
