I have to agree with you AModelCat on the control valve being the culprit. As I keep thinking of how this has been working and then not . Makes me believe that something is mechanically controling the fluid and is intermittent. A pump typically does not act like that . I have not found any information on the control valve or a rebuild kit available . Did find a rebuilt unit in my town for $609.00 with a warranty. Seriously thinking on picking up that box assy and installing it in my truck.

I don’t know anything about that but sounds very possible. A friend adjusted one on a 1970 Plymouth his moms car it never was Same -squirrelly seems as if you could start it up with fluid in a bucket and hoses in bucket instead of reservoir and check pump same way you check a fuel pump. Then hook to box and other hose from box in bucket and check flow through box. Maybe needs to be bled out through box to get air out after draining fluid. Although fluid should work it’s way out by running w cap off resevioir for a while .too bad you cans connect hoses from m another trucks pump. I keep thinking of old Ford pick up trucks after sitting king pins would freeze up so bad need replacing meanwhile detroying rag joint connector on shaft and plastic bushings in column. Amodelcat sounds knowledgeable on valve. And a valve is something to go bad or plug from sitting. My water pump impeller snapped clean stayed together and only spun partially. Same thing on an old dodge I had no play but pump would still spin a bit figured out in springtime after changing heater core . First time I saw that and made me check my truck WP after it leaked out weep hole .I wonder if that’s your problem impeller turns somewhat till it gets slightest resistance then slows then pumps a bit while not under load. Be easy to check with pump off only other way is on Detroit remove air compressor not worth it

As I recap all my symptoms , it leans more towards the steering box valve and not the pump. I am going to my friends shop and pick up a remanufactured gear box. Mine is original and has 850k on it . As a hydraulic guy it all points to the steering box. Sad thing there is no kit available for those . So i feel that at this time instead of going inside the steering box and try to repair the issue just replace with a rebuilt one with a warranty.

I replaced the power steering pump and bled all the air out of the system and still I have the same issue I am now perplexed as to what is going on. If the truck sets for a short while , the steering seems to be ok while the front is off the ground , but still does not feel right like before all this BS started.
I do not like to just throw parts at the truck in hopes something fixes it.

You greased kingpins real good I’m sure. What if you bleed with truck running fluid into a bucket coming out of box. procedure on other post how to bleed ps worked. What about u joints on steering column.I would try bleeding some more. Box is $$$
