No, I did dbbl clutching at Katlaw and for my CDL, they stress smooth quiet shifting .. no grinding!! both up and down shifting. They also -really- stress fuel mpg .. and driving their way helps get better mileage.

Made it thru one of the 'mandatory' hurdles today .. the obstacle course. It was wicked!! and the one at Conway is worse I hear (this was at Crowder). We all passed! :)

    Hey kmfishing!

I plan to attend Central Tech later this year, as well! They recommended Conway to me, as well, since they reimburse half your tuition, I believe. I look forward to hearing how it goes for ya.

    Good luck

I thought so, my wife is reading the posts you have now and is very excited by what you have said. I will be training with another company near us, but find your posts to very helpful. Keep them up as you can, they are very informative.

Hello Tinman, I went to Crowder for the full month-long (now five weeks, if I understand it correctly) program several years ago. Kelli, Lonnie, Darren and Janice were the instructors then. Say "Hi" to Kelli and everyone for me (tell her I'm the guy with the white volvo that drops by every once in a while). The obstacle course is very close to that used at ConWay, or it was in my day. In any event, the same skills are tested, so if you can pass one you can pass the other. Hint: you can take the test as fast or as SLOW as you like, as long as it is in a forward gear. Hint hint. If you're lucky they will still be using the skidpad to get your slick road skills up to snuff. If you go to YouTube and search for "crowder skidpad" you'll see some video I shot there last year... you'll recognize the place :) Good luck, Jim

I take it you drive for Conway TL too? How long have you been there? Care to share your thoughts or experiences?

I don't live too awful far from Joplin, and they have a terminal in the town I live, so I'd think freight would be pretty steady thru here with decent home time.

Weird, I thought I replied to this already but I don't see the message. Anyway, I used to drive for CFI until about a year ago. You can find my blog covering much of that experience by doing a google search for "OTRjournal cfi blog". Good luck, Jim

Yeah, I will for sure keep everyone up to date on it. The place I am staying at does not have internet but I am hoping I can find a place that has internet. Im actually staying at a nice 3 bedroom 2 bath house with a full kitchen and washer and dryer. It also come with cable and all too. It is only costing me $375 for 4.5 weeks so it is one heck of a good deal I think. Also, each room has a lock so you dont have to worry about stealing. But as it looks right now I am the only one staying there so I may end up having it to my self. If I cant find a relieable wifi signal I will just write things down on word and when I get a place that has internet then I will upload what I wrote in one post or something like that. I have talked to many drivers and I have heard good things from Central Tech. Also, all the people that I have talked to there at Central Tech are super nice and helpful. Yes, I do like how Conway pays half the the tuition after you pull just one load with them. I am getting pretty dang excited to get going that is for sure.

    Well .. I'm still here .. can't believe how fast it's gone and only Fri/Sat left ..

Wed we got out for a drive locally working on driving and shifting. After lunch we went to the obstacle course and got to run it once before being tested on it. All 8 of us passed but it was pretty tough. Getting as close to an object w/o hitting it does go against what we learned about driving in school and life. Then we started backing exercises.

Thurs we got up early and left at 4am for our night drive 'test' through Neosho .. a critical exercise we were told. It was tough, and I got to go first making it a little harder as well. I got through it with a few minor issues and was graded accordingly .. they show little mercy. It is definately a get it or go home attitude. In my truck, 2 others did better and 1 did a good bit worse. After that we went to breakfast at the school and then headed to the lot for backing practice. The one guy from my truck and one from the other were pulled aside and told they were going home. One had his wife here as they were planning to team, so she left as well .. sadly she was one of the better drivers in class. We are now 5. It was a shock .. though not totally unexpected.

Then we met with Jean from Conway (FM) about Co. policies etc. Then off to lunch followed by some classroom stuff and then back to the hotel early.

Tomorrow is Skid Pad, Drop & Hook, and who knows .. we're never quite sure. While we do have another driving test, Pre-trip, backing test and final classroom test, I got the impression that having made it this far, unless we really screw up we are likely headed out with trainers next week.

This is definately no easy process, and anyone coming better be on their 'A' game .. no second chances. If, and I believe I will, I make it through it the accomplishment will mean that much more.

    Wow!!!

    Tinman!
