Driving in the Oilfield

Yes you can make money, my exp. is in TX ( Pecos-Monihan-Kermit- Odessa/Midland) , get in with the right Company ( someone w/ at least 5 trks) and are not afraid of working hard and long long hrs, yea you'll be a hand. Believe 1/3 of what you hear down there, drive your truck and know your #### inside an out, be lowkey and watch whats being done. Sand, Water, Oil, Fuel, Chem, it is definitly not your typical trucking work.

 

I made $70K and only worked six months out of the year back in '08.......I'm hearing conditions are fairly similar or even better than '08 down in the Permian and S. Texas, so yes,you can make good money........what's your position on 100+ hour weeks??

 

I run flatbed to the oilfield. I definitely don't do 100 hour weeks, because my company doesn't take the oilfield exemption. We are the normal 11/14/70 hour clock. My gross payroll has averaged about $1800 a week, based on 25% of gross revenue to the truck.

It's been nuts. Especially after ELD's became mandated. Customers are having a hard time getting loads covered. Rates are going up.

Find a company that pays a percentage. 25% is about what you should expect for starting pay. That's what I pay myself, then I also get a settlement check as a truck owner.

 

In sand the bigger companies are all going ELD. They just don’t want to take chances because of drivers messing up logs.

$2000 a week gross is the top end with ELD.

If you can find a guy with just a few trucks that still uses 100 air mile radius exempt with paper logs and is ok with you running as you wish. Then $3000 a week is easy to get

 

I'll take the 'slow in trucking part'. Yes it can be slow in trucking for specific companies. I've seen this especially in the oilfield. There is a lot of 'who you know' in the oilfield when it comes to contracts. I will not name the specific carrier but there is a major oilfield operator and the ceo went to college with the guy who happens to own a trucking company which hauls crude oil. Guess who gets the contracts, lol! You can also have situations where managers overpromise and underdeliver to the customer so the customer calls in another carrier. This happens quite often and will result in drivers getting slow work until another contract can be found which doesn't happen overnight.

 

Go with a company that pays ticket time and try to get at least 8 loads a day. You'll make good money. Run hard and at least 15 hrs a day.

 

8 loads in a 12hr shift. Boxes? Your not doing 8 shift with a can.

 

"Ticket time" = water hauler
