I will be (hopefully) getting my CDL in the next few months. Assuming i made $1000 gross a week, I was wondering if someone could explain about how much you make after fed. Taxes. I realize state taxes differ state to state so if anyone from AR knows that it would be helpful.

It also depends on how many dependents you claim. I would venture to say between 20% to 30%, mind you this is just a guess, and probably not a educated guess. There might be other deductions, union, uniforms, insurance, etc.

The same as you would make if you are at any other job paying $1000 a week.

lets say you live in a no income tax state. You are going to lose $70 bucks right off the top to FICA and another $10 to the medicare tax. Depending on your tax bracket you are going to have anywhere from $175 to $250 taken out in federal taxes. Now if you are also getting per diem toss all those numbers out!

“Who the hell is FICA and Fed and why are they taking all my money?”

Welcome to the world of the USA worker/taxpayer. The twisted attitude you developed (were taught) in school will quickly change as you start being demanded of to pay for all the “free stuff” that benefits everyone except those who work hard.

Do a google search. You should find a “withholding estimate calculator”

Rule of thumb- 30% of gross, sometimes more (CA) sometimes less ( TX)

Thank you all who replied. What is per diem. I've seen it before but I don't know what it is.

Per diem used to be a living allowance for being away from home- think OTR or any thing that didn't get you home for weeks at a time- think of as road trip money. Anyways , it was deductible on Fed taxes so your fed bill was lower. It ( the deduction) is gone as of this year so you cannot claim it anymore as a truckdriver.that being said, some companies now pay it as a bonus- think of it as " show up money". Basically if a company says ".34 cents p.m. w / .5 perdiem " then your getting .39 that is taxable. The new way is to a check as a bounus usally as a per day thing that is not taxed

I live in Ar and claimed single with 1 exemption. My average net was around 73% of gross. More taxes on a super week and less when I got lazy.
