Stevens Transport - Dallas, Tx.

Ok, Im at the end of the first of three weeks of my driving school (its independent). My classmate told me yesterday he was thinking about Stevens. I hope he didn't call the recruiter again tonight, so I can head him off in the morning and tell him about this thread lol. The recruiter called me too, but fortunately I know about this website and check out any company here first!

 

ive been training with stevens transport since sept,27th it is not as bad as people say. You must start some where and most training companys have thier down sides. well for that you will always find things you dont like about any company you work for thats life(WORK) thats what it is.
i find alot of people think this job is easy, its not its very lonley and can be very stressful. the life stye its self is alot to get used to and any thing that goes wrong people sit drive and think to much in to on that one problem until its making them crazy. i went to a independent school in detroit michigan over the summer and was the only one in my class that went to stevens and out of 20 people only three of us are still driving every one said stevens is to much training to long not enough $$ well iam averg 3000 mi a week now my checks run 375 to 450 a trip and am cash too trips a week so am happy. So hope you find that great company your looking for because their are alot of very exspinced drivers out their looking for jobs right now because of are econemy, good luck!!

 

suthin, there is not one training company that does not have a lengthy thread about how bad they are. It is less about the company, and more about you, the individual, and how you will handle the demands of the job, and life style, and the enormous amount of items you will have to learn. it is not about driving down the interstate, any monkey can be trained to do that.

Stevens is what you make of them, they will invest a lot of time and money into training you to be a safe truck driver, it is up to you to accept the training, and the sometimes childish treatment one will get....hey in reality we are a child learning to be a truck driver .

 

I had an appeal hearing with Colorado unemployemnt today, and it looks like Stevens needs to change its claim regarding no layoffs...Colorado unemployment decided that I was, in fact, laid off. I also got a bill from an outside collection agency (that's right, Stevens sent me to a collection agency before even making a single attempt to collect anything themselves...) for the tuition for their CDL mill. I'll be going to court on that, since apparently, in Colorado, the courts have held that every contract has an implicit guarantee of good faith and fair dealing.

I'll be sure to let everyone know about the OSHA whistleblower case and its outcome as I get updates.

Also, if it isn't already apparent to all-for your own good, stay away from Stevens!!!!

Finally, for all the Stevens cheerleaders-why don't you go ahead and give some honest answers to these questions:

1: Isn't it true that the "cash price" for CDL training at your "training center" is $3000, and that people Steven's Transport sponsors are asked to finance $6000 for the same training at a 19% interest rate?

2: Isn't it true that students can get the SAME training at a community college or another training center for around $700-1500, using actual student loans at a reasonable interest rate?

3: Isn't it true that Steven's Transport OPTS OUT of workman's compensation? Isn't it true that you require your employees to see your doctors, in TEXAS, for workman's comp issues, no matter where in the U.S. they're from? Isn't it true that you require them to stay in Texas for the entire duration of their rehabilitation? Hasn't Steven's been sued for this, many times, and lost?

4: How can Steven's train over 100 students a week if their whole fleet is only 2000 trucks? 100 students a week x 52 weeks=5200 students-for 2000 trucks...suspicious, isn't it? It almost seems like they make the majority of their money collecting tuition from students and from the government for sponsoring the training.

5: Isn't it true that Steven's does forced dispatch, and will require students to pull overweight loads, and overlength trailers in violation of state and federal law? Isn't it true that good trucking jobs, such as those offered by Wal-Mart, Fed-Ex, etc. require a perfect driving record?

6: Isn't it true that there are two orientation classes that students are required to attend, FOR FREE, the first of which consists of 4 fifteen hour days? Doesn't Steven's think that they should pay their employees?

7: Isn't it true that Steven's requires students to sign unenforceable mandatory arbitration agreements, even though transportation workers are specifically exempt from mandatory, binding arbitration according to the Federal courts?

 

Stevens is a training company that many people have expectations of which are not fullfilled, and then complain gripe, and sue. As for me,it is my way into the trucking business, and it is working for me, because i make it work for me.

 

. stevens isn't that bad i mean come on you're the (and if i get banned from this site for saying this sorry just my opinion) stupid gimp that wanted to work there i mean come on stevens doesnt have four 15 hour orientaion day's they start # 7 and end at 5 just like the office does and they do have two orientation classes one when you first start to do all the paperwork and road testing ,d.o.t physical and drug screen and the second one is after you do you're otr training with a trainer and get paired up with another dummy to see what the other driver learned and share from that expeiriance. oh yeah the cost for a cdl went up since the 1980's jack it's now 5000 not 700 or 1500 . . peace i'm out . tes i went to us trucking school in detroit mich after my loan is payed i will have payed $7450 thats intrest in all but steves is paying for that every month. they will also pay me back the intrest when the bills are payed in full. am happy with stevens yes they baby set alot but for good reason theres alot of babys out here who thing this job is easy!!! its not(at all) just keep on keepin on!!am out...

 

Nice personal attack. Let me address some of these statements.

 

Dosn't everyone remember when you first started out in the job market out of school or just start at a new company and and were bottom of the pecking order??? You had to take everyone's crap, got the worst schedule and got stuck with the worst jobs to prove your self and your work ethic??? My husband just got out of grad fleet 3 weeks ago after starting training the first week of august. he got his cdl paid for by a federal grant because he lost his job of ten years so at least we arn't owning stevens for this.
It was quite a mental adjustment to be just another grunt (he used to be a supervisor) having to prove his skills, work ethic and gain respect. So he vented to me, typed emails and deleted them and sucked it up. Tried to solve what he could,and let the rest go. complaining to actual stevens people would only make it worse in the end. His dm when he was in dumb/dumber told him when he went out on his last stage of grad fleet that it will get worse before it gets better. This is so true. From what my husband has figured out you need to prove yourself to your dm that you can run the miles they will respect you and work with you, not peg you as a slacker ect.
Isn't that the same in any job and life in general???

 

I got my training there about 12 years ago and was out of there in six months as soon as I found someone else to hire me. It was awful.
