I am planning on getting my CDL early next year.
I was born with a heart issue, and had corrective surgery at age 9.
It was a coarctation of the aorta. A section of the aorta artery is stunted and doesn't grow. It restricts blood to below your chest. The surgery cuts out the bad section and they sew the good ends back together.
The surgery was a fix. I don't have any issues now.
I am wondering if this is going to be an issue.
How can I find out or where can I go to find out if this is going to be an issue for me?
I don't want to spend a bunch of time or money and then find out I am disqualified medically.
Any advice on how I can find out more information would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Get a DOT physical on your own and find out. Some CVS Pharmacy's do them pretty cheap; I've heard from $88 to $100
Many, many truckers have had heart surgery and many other ailments and can still pass a DOT physical. Some are missing an arm, leg, or eye and can still pass ok.Gypsy27 and WesternPlains Thank this. -
You should be fine.

I might suggest finding a local doc that is DOT certified.
National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners Search
Won't take all that much time to go talk to them at least and see what they think. Explain the situation and what you want to do, then go from there. -
Yup... Some even pass with itching and swelling of the hemorrhoids.

Seriously..... Don't think DOT will have any problem with you.Chinatown Thanks this. -
This works real well with that problem; a multi-purpose brush.
WesternPlains Thanks this. -
Keep health history to yourself
At DOT physical don’t offer that information. Just a excuse for them to deny or send you for more test$DSK333 Thanks this. -
i have a huge scar on my side where they went in, no way to hide that.

Where I live that would be no big deal, maybe a heart/ stress test but that is all free up here.
Not so in your neck of the woods
Hopefully doc gives your ticker a listen and you are good to go
Never had my shirt off for a physicalAModelCat Thanks this. -
If THAT condition no longer exists and surgery fixed it there is NO problem.
You are going to have a shirt off for this one. When the doc sees the cuts and understands what you have potentially had you explain it and be done with it. It's fixed. They can always prove it by mapping the diameter of the affected vessal with a sonogram in a few minutes. No pinch no problem.
