If you don't like resetting, simply don't. Use the recap like has been the only option for 70 years.

There is no regulation saying you have to take a 34...it is called an option...I like 34's, I run my ### off and burn my 70 as fast as I can, make my weekly paycheck as quickly as possible, then reset and start all over again with a fresh 70 within the same 8 day period you're running recap...

It's an option...For some of us, it fits our particular situation. I prefer to get my 70 hours banged out in 5 days, and take 2 days off (ergo, 34 hour reset), thus starting the next pay period with a fresh clock.

Don't mess with my reset.
I run coast to coast, so my 70 zaps quickly.
I take 1 day off and I'm rolling hard again..
It's all in how you look at it.
Would I rather not have to take it at all and just keep working? Of course.
But, without it I'd have to sit TWO days waiting on a recap to roll around and THEN midnight each day.
NOPE. Leave it. -
No offense to the OP, but this highlights a reason why this industry is the way it is.
These bigger training companies are brainwashing new drivers with their own internal policies, making them think it's a law that you must take a 34 hour restart every week, or it's illegal and unsafe to drive over 65 mph, and the Pilot truckstop is Mecca.
The last place I worked would not allow us to use the 8/2 sleeper berth split. Their reason? It creates confusion. But we had PeopleNet elogs. There was no confusion. They had half the fleet of 200 trucks believing that the 8/2 split was illegal!

I don't think this is coming from the carriers. I think the notion is spread through simple misunderstanding and lots of assumptions while in their infancy stage of training, and it sticks and it spreads. Carriers and planners and dispatchers will never want drivers to take unnecessary resets. Lots of new drivers don't understand how to calculate and determine if a reset is truly beneficial or not. Often it's an even wash between taking a reset or continuing on recaps hours.
Every situation is different. Expected future dispatch, possible future dispatch, day of week, home time near or not, delivery/pu appointments pending, and other factors all must be weighed in. Some times a reset is a must and will happen organically, sometimes it can't be worked in, sometimes it doesn't matter much one way or the other.Truckermania Thanks this.
