Friend's tandem axle dump truck quit moving today. It will only drive if he locks the differential in the cab. If the differential is unlocked, both drive shafts spin, but the truck doesn't move. With it locked, the front axle is the only one that drives. Visually confirmed in some lose sand that the front axle did in fact spin.

Where should he start? Pull the half shafts to see if one of them is broken, or is it more likely that a gear is broken in the differential?

    Thanks

I am not a mechanic, but from what you describe, I would say one of the axle shafts is broken. I had a co-worker from Jamaica. In his country, truckers take the axles in the house with them every night.

See, I am not a mechanic. From what he described, one of the axle shafts could be broken. Due to the terrain and the way equipment is abused in Jamaica, axle shafts are frequently broken and they are a hot item for midnight auto supply.

Pull the rear Differential. if the short shaft between the rearends is turning and the truck is not moveing, their is a problem in the back rearend.

Thanks guys. That at least lets me know that the problem is on the rear axle. I'll help him pull the half shafts first, since that will be easier and then he'll know if he has to go further.

almost definetly an axle if its not making any horrible sounds. put the truck up on jacks and spin the tires, either part of the drivetrain or another tire will spin. if it doesn't, thats where your problem should be.

and remember to change the diff oil too!

Pulled everything apart today. Axles were fine, so I had to keep going. Turns out that all 12 of the ring gear rivets had sheared....
