When I first got my ELD back in Dec (Garmin), all was fine until I dropped the truck off at the shop (Ryder) for service. I came back Monday morning & logged in to my ELD & found that everything the shop did (moving the truck) was logged to me. I had been logged in for several hours during Sunday night.

I did some research & found that I should have been "signing out" of the software (log), not just going to off duty. I didn't know that I could "sign out". Ok, so I learned something. Now, good to go :)

Fast forward to last spring, & by signing out, no issues during that shop visit / Ryder service.

About 3 months ago, I had an issue where the batteries shorted & it damaged the Garmin thing plugged into the ECM port. So we ordered another "thing", got it installed & set up. During setup, I noticed the software had a few updates .... different things changed in the software, but all was good.

Last week (1st time with new thing/software), I took the truck to Ryder again for another service, logged out & "signed out". Monday, I go back to pick up the truck, log in & I have errors that the truck was used & it wants me to assign that time to a "Driver". There are no other drivers... only me.

So, I thought I'd "create a driver" & call it shop. It wanted two names, so I called it Ryder Shop. Then it wanted drivers licence number, state, truck VIN, etc etc. I was hesitant to do all that because I don't know what the legal aspect of this is or how it will affect DOT audits or inspections etc.

I dont know how to properly handle this. I am an only driver in a small family owned business. I am the administrator on the ELD also. I even went into that to see if I could figure out how to handle this. I found nothing. No where to assign it, no way to create a shop/maintenance account, no setting to assign this to or no way to delete this.

Any idea how to deal with this, advice or how you deal with the shop issues. Another problem is, that when they check codes etc, they have to remove the ELD thing from the ECM port. This has previously set off an alert that the thing has been unplugged.

In the end, there is no way to clear these issues. Thanks for any relevant advice.

Leave it down as shop time and just make some number for a license number and if somebody official looking ask just tell them whole situation. The other alternative is call the shop and see if somebody there has a cdl number you can put on it.

Who made the eld you use? Look them up then call or e-mail them. Let thier tech support talk you thru it. Also whoever the admin is on your account. Should be able to delete that driving time. (It will still show, but just not assigned to you. They will have to note why they did it. But no big deal) Like I originally said go to the manufacturer.

If you can get through the next 8 days without a roadside inspection, then it will only be an issue if you're audited within the next 6 months. You'll be fine.

I second call the manufacturers tech support. You should be able to go into administration and assign that as maintenance/shop use.

One of the overlooked issues with ELD is, by law, only named individuals can have an account, and only one. No sharing of accounts for e.g. shop use.

Personally what I would do is simply make a Shop account, and make up numbers. It would take a real prick (or annoyed) DOT officer to get in trouble.

Just leave it alone. Like @windsmith said, make it through the next 8 days and the alert asking you to assign that drive time to someone will disappear. No big deal. If inspected during that time, just explain to the DOT officer that the mechanics were moving the truck.

I just unplug mine when at shop. Mayby you don't have that option. Also my trk is a 2001 and eld doesn't know the difference on miles. Like if the mechanic tests drives the trk.

Just reject the driving time. Reason : truck in shop. Is what I do all the time. Keep the invoice from shop for record. I’ll try to keep it simple.

    Greetings....
The proper way is to Call Live the Company that Runs the Application and they will assist you with all necessary corrections. Once is done, a report is created to justify the Changes. *** "Creating".. "drivers" is considered "Fraud" by the DOT.
    Happy Trails.
