Relocating - CDL from one state to the other

    We are considering a move from Louisiana to the great state of Texas. Obviously, I will have to obtain a Texas CDL upon making residence there. My question is, will I have to take the driving portion of the test? I am guessing I will have to take the written part or at least some form of testing when obtaining a new resident Texas CDL, but does anyone know really what I will need to prepare for?

    Of course this is based on the fact I have had & currently have, a Louisiana CDL Since 1993. Before that, I had a Louisiana Chauffeurs licence from 1982 - 1990 or 91 something like that.

    According to the Texas Department of Public Safety page (http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/DriverLicense/CommercialLicense.htm)
    concerning moves into Texas, as long as you hold a valid CDL license from another state, the written and driving examinations are waived, but you must pass a vision exam. What isn't stated clearly is whether the HAZMAT test is also waived. When I move to PA, they required that the HAZMAT written test be passed in order to transfer that endorsement, but all other tests were waived. "Your mileage may vary."

    Also any personal vehicles must be inspected and registered in Texas through the local Tax Office of the county you will be living in before a license will be issued.

    Hi i just relocated also to texas from another state...what a pain and expensive too...go to dmv to get instruction forms...you will have to get fingerprinted...costs about $80 and you have to wait for clearance...takes about a week
    yes you have to register your vehicle before getting a license...before that you have to get your vehicle inspected...there are places all over that do them...gas stations do it usually...costs under $15...basic check...wipers lights etc...one problem i had was my side window tint was too dark so i had to get that scraped off...$50 and another $50 to have lawful tint put on
    ok then to the county building for registering...another about $180...bring your vehicle title too
    then to the dmv...costs about $65 AND you have to retake your haz test...there were placarding questions i never saw on a test before...if you have haz on cdl
    so it cost me about $440 to get my license transferred...welcome to texas

    wow.texico is expensive.i relocated to alabama from ga. and all it cost me was the price of the license. ohh the price to become a texican-

    yeah i transferred with my company...was warned before that it would be pricey...not that much though...yikes

    Yes, but you may be able to self certify yourself in an "excepted" category in order to keep your cdl active. But you won't be able to drive commercially until you get a med card. Check at your DPS office.
