Does anyone have proof that these companies actually enforce debt collection practices if you skip out after training and work for another company? I swear, you could get out of those contracts even if enforceable usually, by simply alleging labor law violations. You signed that contract under the presumption that they'd follow all State and Federal laws under DOT, such as giving you 30 uninterrupted minutes during off duty lunch time, but they're blowing up your Qualcomm with messages demanding immediate attention. Breach of contract, null and void, do not collect $2000, do not pass go

I think a lot of those handbooks have language like, "nothing in this agreement is a contract or guarantee of employment." If it's not a contract and you're not signing something separate and explicit for their school, then by default they don't have grounds to even threaten collections. That could be the caveat out of it.

You make a very good point there I know they do put it on your credit report if you skip out on them and they threaten to sue you for it and I've known several people that end up filing bankruptcy to get rid of the debt. However instead of hiring a lawyer for bankruptcy they should hire an attorney that specializes in labor laws and maybe they could find fault in the companies to void the agreements for the training.

yeah, an employment attorney usually handles cases on a contingency, unlike a BK attorney. As a bonus, you can't discharge student loans in bankruptcy. But this truck school loan thing, is just an unsecured debt. Cease and desist, and do not collect anything ! serves them right

Ive never been to CDL school, never drove for a company that required their own school, and never had to have a trainer... And I have/will never sleep in a truck while someone else is driving that same truck.

So yes it can be done, if you are so inclined to figure out how to do it.

Went to a school, but never had a trainer show me how to drive. The way to do this in California is to get a CDL and the go haul tomatoes or grapes for the first carrier that will take you. They just point to the truck and say "take it from bakersfield to sacramento." After a week you know how to drive that thing

Cattleman84 your obviously old school and congrats to you for that and everything you accomplished but that was a totally different generation back when men were men and gay meant that you were happy. Today's generation are more commonly known as the snow flake generation it's very different I'm sorry to say my friend but the old days really are over for good.

I agree the old days are gone... But it can still done the same way I did... I got my CDL 6 or 7 years ago, but ive been driving class 8 trucks for nearly 20 years. And I have helped 2 others get their CDL in the last 2 years, same way I did. Now days it really depends on where you live. If you live in a major farming area getting your CDL is much easier... For now anyway until the feds start requiring more formal training.

The only problem with company paid training is, you will be required to work for them for x amount of time. It you have to pay them back "THIER" cost for training. Big deal!!!! It will be hard (not impossible) to find anyone decent to hire you for the first 6 months anyway. As long as you plan on paying your bill. You can leave then at any time.
My friend who is now a fleet owner. Used to be my ride along helper in the moving business. When he decided he could be more than a helper. WE decided the best plan was to quit me after the busy summer season. Once the kids go back to school. It slows down quite a bit. So he signed up and went to school at (UGH GAG ME) Prime. Went in end if Sept stayed till April. He passed the majic 6 months mark, and signed on with North American van lines. Prime sent him demand letters and actually took him to court for payment. Judge ordered him to pay $100 a month. After two months in the moving biz as a driver. He just wrote them a check. So point here is all company training aint bad. Specially if you dont have $6k up front. As long as you pay your bills. It's having all season driving and making it past the majic 180 day mark.

That's a cool story I'm glad your friend is happy these days. Prime is actually one of the least worst companies to be forced to trained with my girlfriend decided to go to CRST instead of private school like me so I got drug thru the mud there with her for 10 months last year while she served her committment
