13sp with air leak by splitter airlines or from airlines

Discussion in 'Trucks [ Eighteen Wheelers ]' started by peterbilt_2005, Feb 24, 2015.

  1. Recently had a new. (Under 200k) 2014 RTLO-18913A 13speed installed.
    Clutch replaced 75k miles ago
    Clutch brake good shape
    Transmission 20k miles ago
Clutch cable replaced 2k miles ago

    Long story short.

Mechanics who did the work, must of missed or didn't insert an airline into a union far enough.

When truck is parked not running. Air is heard coming from top of transmission.

Then by morning air tanks are MT.

The trans mission has at least 4 separate airlines for the shifter and splitter.

My question is. Do I chase the airlines and unions? Or is a part of the transmission leaking air?

    Thoughts?

Last time I had that happen I unscrewed the rubber shifter boot from the cab floor and had good access that way.

If you can hear it when the engine is off, get under the truck and find the leak. When you put a finger on the fitting, the sound will change. Most push/ pull type fittings only seal for the first line thats been in them for a few years. Most the time when lines are changed, they dont seal right. The other thing is if this was done during the winter, the oring could need to "warm up" to get a better seal, like 150° in the trans area, that would happen in summer conditions.

Like Cetan says if you can hear it should be able too find it. Kids bubbles in a squirt bottle works great for finding leaks.

  8. I thought about the boot access. Little tight for my paws to fit down where it sounds.

I took off two old brass unions and replaced them with black plastic unions.

I've isolated the leak to passenger side above exhaust pipe. Now with bulkhead in the way. I can feel most the unions. The ones I've touched are not leaking. No sound change or bubbles.

uploadfromtaptalk1424925512650.jpg the one that is visible and in good shape. But below that I can't get visual on . only feel.

    Ugghh
