I'm still an artist. It's the other half of my primary income. =) I work independently. I've got my own shop in Manhattan that I run as a ghost (basically, I sleep and they make me money.) The autoclave and all the equipment comes on the road with me which not only makes me extra $$, but promotes my shop as well.
It's a hard job to live off of on it's own...I went the shop route because a business loan is easy to pay off when you've got others doing the work. It's one of those jobs that depends on the moods of others - and that's never a good thing to base your soul income expectations off of.
