Okay just so I'm straight here, so you mean 2¢ per mile, do you mean 1/50th of a cent per mile, or do you mean 20¢ per mile, because you've said it all three ways.
I'd say he either changed accounts, or his bonuses changed. Like his safety went down or something. Every thousand miles you do a week is a $20/week difference. Over the course of a year is $1,040. But I'm not sure how much that's going to affect your taxes either way.
Reduction in pay of .2 per mile??

Sorry, to be clear - $0.02 cents per mile. I know, I suck at typing numbers.
He is averaging 2,200 - 2,500 miles per week, which is how I came up with the average of $50 per week.
They also reduce pay for the per-diem by $0.02 cpm for the administration of the per-diem, which he has opted out of - sorry for the confusion. -
Now that works out to be right at $2,600/yr difference. If it were me – which it ain't so take it with a grain of salt – I'd want to know why my pay was reduced without being informed ahead of time. But I wouldn't be up in arms about it, either. It sounds like to me either he had a bonus that he was getting that dropped off – for instance new hire bonus for X amount of miles – or some sort of clerical error. Such as someone signing him back for the per-diem admin. Either way, the full story ain't being told.TheTruckersWife Thanks this. -
Can’t say for certain what the issue is. Could be tied to his current job designation.
But I can tell you from having worked with them in the past. They will make it right if they’ve made a mistake, you’ll get everything you’re owed.TheTruckersWife Thanks this. -
As you said, if there was a reduction in pay due to the change in driver status, it would have been nice to have that clearly communicated, beforehand. But as a tiny tiny cog in one big ### wheel, I can see how that doesn't always trickle down. -
We’ve run the numbers on it.
If you’re struggling, even a little bit. Take this per diem for a year or two. It won’t have a large enough impact on your social security to even worry about.
That said, he may need to recapture some of this in future years. But that’s an easy thing to do.
The main priority, for now, should be focused on the next 12-24 months if you’re needing the additional incom.towmantater and TheTruckersWife Thank this. -
The other thing I like to point out @TheTruckersWife is that understand the nature of the business, too. This week you might be short $50, next week you're up $150. Just be aware, that's all.

Yes, I will pay more in taxes. What extra I pay in taxes pales to the impact on my social security. If you eliminate the 2 cpm charge , then yes, the per diem option is better. With the charge it becomes murky.JOHNQPUBLIC, Swiss Mountain Dog and TheTruckersWife Thank this. -
