I'm sure this is a regular question from many wannabes. So sorry if this is the case, just so much info to go through.

Anyways, I recently decided that I wanted to get into truck driving as a career. I am comfortable with OTR without problem, at least until I get some time under my belt. I do not however have the money to go to a independent school for my CDL. So in trying to find another method information was passed to me stating four companies that will potentially pay for my training as long as I work for them for a specified period.

I am fine with going this route. However, considering the slew of stories and problems regarding these companies, I am at a loss. As follows is the list that was given to me.

    SCHNEIDER NATIONAL
    SWIFT
    CR ENGLAND
    STEVENS TRANSPORT

I would appretiate any help with this problem I seem to be having. I also do realize that every company has its evils. I guess this is kind of an effort to find the best potential match for me. A company that I suppose won't drive me insane for a year or two until I can get a local, or more realistic OTR job. Also, I want to be with a company that will not expect illegal log keeping or try pushing me out the door otherwise.

Thank you for any help that you can give.

    Cory

Thank you Shaw....that also goes with what I was thinking too. Seems like they have a decent setup.

Anyone else have any advice? I'm willing to entertain other ideas as well.

I just want to get into the job as smoothly as possible with the least amount of headaches. My biggest fear is to go through school, get on the road, and feel like I need out of it. I know I'll do fine with the driving and being away from home, but my concern is dealing with some horrible company.

wiseguy- You can cross Schneider off your list. They shut down their training facility and are only hiring drivers with at least 6 months experience.

Have you considered Roehl Transport up in Marshfield, WI? I think they still have a CDL training program. They certainly won't ask you to log illegally (nor run you enough miles that you'd need to), and I can say from experience their trainers are really good.

As an experienced driver, I don't care for Roehl...but as a trainee just needing to get your feet wet, you can do a lot worse. I will caution you though, by going to a specific company's school, you'll usually have to sign a contract with that company for a specified amount of time saying if you quit (or in the case of some companies such as Stevens, get fired) before the time is over, you'll owe them the full cost of their school.

I'd steer as clear of Swift as possible. Don't know much about CR England, but you can find plenty of info on this very site about them. Good luck, you're coming into the industry at a rough time.

I had a feeling something was up with Schneider's training program, their site didn't say a whole lot regarding it. Thanks for the heads up on them. From looking at Roehl's site, seems like that may be a good possibility too. One good thing is its closer to home than the others, which I like.

Yeah, I was aware about the contract. Which I don't believe is something that I would have a problem with keeping in check. But that was also part of my worry. Would hate to get into bed with a company, hate the place, and feel the urge to leave, then putting myself in a bind because of it.

That would be why I came here to get some advice from actual people tho. Tough to read through all the complaints and really know what the deal is when there are always a few people that hate someplace. I might actually look further into Roehl tho, seems like they are possibly not just another CDL factory looking for a quick buck.

Don't expect too much from Roehl, they are pretty much another driver mill...but when you're first getting into the industry you don't have a lot of choices and they'll give you better training than most. It's not somewhere you're going to want to stay for 5 years in all likelihood, but they're one of the more tolerable mills to get started and get your first year in at. Good luck.
