I do not have a CDL so Con-Way wants to train me in MO (I live in NH) to do Over the Road. I hear the wait for your own truck is nearing three weeks, is that true? Also about how long is the school? I cant go for more than a month or two without pay. If anyone has any suggestions on what I should do, whether or not I should accept, or any advice at all would be appreciated. I have applied at hundreds of trucking companies and Conway and CR England are the only two to call me back, I want to avoid CR England though. I have spotless MVR and Criminal Records, just no CDL and I live in NH, out of most hiring areas. Thanks alot, I really appreciate any help!

i just finished my cdl course at nu way

its one of the more reputable ones(if u can call any of them reputable) in the state. the class costs 5 thousand if u pay for it before u graduate.

not a problem if u are able to get fully reimbursed by the company

depending on how well u take information and directions. you should be able to finish in 3 weeks.

i finished in 4(i was slowed down because i had trouble picking up the pre-trip inspection.)

u can visit their site on the inet

if u can't pay for the tuition up front get ready to shell out some extra dough. about 1495 from the day you get u'r new job. then the interest depending on how long a loan u get. some ppl walk out with a 6 year loan at 18% interest. in english that means a 5g loan turns into 10 or 11 over 6 years - more than double.

the loan company they use would be similar to a loan shark's interest rates in some places

overall if u'r just trying to get a cdl asap the cost vs time may be worth it.

Con-way will not send you through school without some financial obligations of your own. Last time I checked it was about $1500 for your share of tuition, lodging and meals. The Crowder course is 4 weeks long, and you are not earning income while you are learning. When you earn your CDL you will spend 3-5 days in orientation in Joplin MO, then you will be assigned a finisher. Once you are dispatched with your finisher you will be paid a mileage rate. Oh yeah, and Con-way does not make you sign a contract to pay back the training either, nor do they require you to stay with them for a minimum time to cover the training. They just ask that you pull one load.

Thanks Matt and Red, definitely appreciate the advice. I have been thinking about training for my CDL locally, then signing on with Con-Way or maybe Roehl. I think I can manage 4 weeks without pay, but its the possibility of waiting even longer for a finisher, or eventually my own truck to be assigned to me that worries me. I got most of the other expenses covered, I just dont want to be stuck out in MO for a couple of extra weeks with no money and no pay, waiting for a finisher. I really want to make this career change though, retail is killing me, really looking forward to eventually hitting the road. I got to take some time and think things over. Any further advice is more than welcome. Thanks!!

I am starting CDL school in Drumright Ok. on April 15th with Conway. I was at my last job for 18 years and was so sick of I was almost divorced so this is a new beginning for me.I have looked at just about every company out there and Conway seems like the best start for me. Don't know how much past a year I will stay but at least a year.Seems like every piece of advise I get says at least a year.Good experience.Hope you do good and find what makes you happy, seems some on here nothing would make them happy ( should start their own company, they know how to run one so good) anyway keep an open mind and take it all as learning. High school is the last FREE education after that it cost, and I have a PHD (post hole digger)
