HazMat, Passports, and FAST

    Just a heads up for anybody considering Roehl: The company now requires the HazMat Endorsement and Passport, and is in the process of getting FAST certified.

    They are looking at a compliance date of June 1st for the endorsement and passport. Roehl does not pay for this either, but will offer payroll deductions for those that can't fork over the cash in one payment.

    Why don't they pay for it ? It's for their benefit . My carrier reimbursed me for my passport and background check for the hazmat . But then they treat their drivers right and know they'll be around a while . Doesn't say much for their pay either when the only way a driver can pay for hazmat and passport is by payroll deductions . Passports means Canada . I guess they have to advance money for tolls and custom fees because drivers can't afford to pay those either .

    I cross at Sarnia back into the U.S. Approaching the Blue Water bridge on the 402 only FAST trucks can use the left lane and there is a customs booth for FAST trucks only . On the bridge there are 3 lanes . Left lane trucks , center lane FAST trucks , right lane non commercial vehicles .

    The topic was brought up at the quarterly safety meeting I attended. It went:

    Trainer: For those of you that haven't heard, Roehl is now requiring the HazMat Endorsement on you're license. We want you to have this done by June 1st.

    Me: Are they paying for it?

    Trainer: No.

    Me: Guess I'll be looking for a new job in June then.

    Now I probably should have thought that out a little bit, but I have that speak before you think gene in me. While I am a proponent of having the HazMat to expand load opportunities, I don't appreciate the combination of the deadline and having to pay for it myself.

    I am barely making enough to cover my bills and eat right now, as are most drivers I've talked to. I try not to complain much, but this is really irking me. I was told Roehl is "looking to get into the HazMat market" which is a big difference from Roehl having a foot in the market. Seems like a company pipe dream right now.

    Sounds like it's a helluva lot easier to goto work elsewhere. If everyone had the same mindset, these kinds of issues wouldn't be present.

    This is a real Catch-22. The companies that are hiring right now are all terrible, but who wants to haul explosives for rookie-level pay?

    Hopefully I can get one...

    Come on my man, Roehl is trying to "make it around the corner" and so would I (and you). Good company and do not blame them to try to increase income. Hate to hear you may have a hard time with the HASMAT. Worth it to you now and in the future to have regardless who you work for. Hang in there:biggrin_25525:

    Yes, believe me I tried that excuse already and was told (matter-of-factly) that HazMat can be loaded on a flatbed. I knew it already, but hoping for an out.
