The reality is quite different. TNT was a public company listed on numerous stock exchanges and had to run business on open book.
Context : Gulf War, recession, TNT excessive debt related to fast expansion in the 70's and 80's.
Facts : Big institutional stockholder funds was not comfortable anymore with Peter Abeles management style of entrepreneur who took advantage of opportunities, often at great risk. After hard discussions on the Direction Board the institutional shareholder funds won their point and Peter Abeles hand over the direction of the Group to David Mortimer, TNT Group Financial Director since 1985. TNT returned to profitability in 1994.
Context : Late 90's European Postal Authorities with deep pocket invested huge amount of money in transport.
Facts : The Dutch Post (KPN), one of TNT partners in TNT Express Worldwide made a friendly takeover offer accepted by the TNT Board with a premium of 41% over the stock exchange price of TNT's share and no employees lay off. The new organisation was named TNT Post Group (TPG) and listed on stock exchange.
In 2013 TPG, renamed TNT in 2005, ageed to a friendly offer from UPS but the European Commission (anti-trust regulator) blocked the transaction viewing UPS as a threat for the competition in Europe.
However, the recent acquisition of TNT by FEDEX was possible because the relatively weak position of FEDEX on the intra-European market.

@speedyk god Speedy, CF was nothing compared to TNT. CF marketed them selves as the service company, and they had some container shipping partnerships, but good gravy, CF was just a collection of LTL trucking companies and they just so happened to own a few air planes.
TNT had all kinds of "pots in the air" as the saying goes.
But like anything else time marched on and took TNT with it.R. Buron Thanks this. -
>> Annual hire deal comprising leasing flatcars with the services of train crews and locomotives from the railways.
>> TNT paid for the rail sidings, put the rail spur in at it cost, put the hard stand area in at it cost
>> Operated their own gantry cranes built to TNT spécifications
>> TNT developped the Transit-Flat container railcar built to the company spécifications able to carry two 40ft Jumbo containers also specially designed by TNT engineering staff.
>> TNT owned the containers as well as the skeletal trailers pulled by it own fleet of tractors
and/or exclusive contracted owners/operators
Can you imagine the millions of dollars invested by the Group.
