That's just silly advice.
Do you realize how many college educated people can't find work or are stuck in jobs that have nothing to do with their degrees? (not to mention leveraged to their eyeballs from student loans.)
RickG, you're on my list of people I like, trust me when I say it's a short list, so feel privileged. j/k (well, kinda
). I can't agree more. Just because they can't make money at it, doesn't mean there's no money in it. Some will never believe it, because they can't believe it, it'll bruise their fragile little realities. I've given up. I'll just keep making my money. I'm just glad to know there are others making money too.
Wiseguywireless Thanks this. -
Tankergirl, I hate to break it to you BUT, both of those posts you quoted were by me so I am giving silly advice and you like me at the same time so I'm lucky?
It's not silly advice, I make more than enough money driving a truck and will continue to do so until I am tired of it. I however am the exception, not the rule hence the reason chief feels the need to try to belittle me at every turn because "there's no way I make 1200 bucks a week minimum driving an 18 wheeler locally".
Facts are just that, most truckers are making very little right now, freight isn't moving and the wheels aren't turning. The only reason I am still doing it instead of finishing college and going back to work doing something else is because I am in a niche market that is currently inundated with money. Road construction is going to be big for a while because of all the "bailout" money being thrown at it but it's one of the few things that will actually benefit us from it.
Also if you notice, when I posted actual weekly numbers and a copy of my paycheck from this week, chief suddenly seems nowhere to be found but before all you had to do was locate a post of mine and he would be right behind it to call BS on something I said hahahahaha.
I stand by my statements, college is a better option, you just need to research your degree before you commit because the amount of people in trucking still making a decent living is swiftly dwindling. -
hahahaha, man I just got lucky. It's a one man company with 3 trucks, the other two drivers have been there 6+ years (I wonder why
) and he happened to have an empty seat from a guy who just bought his own tractor and belly dump. I knew them from high school because I used to run around with his nephew when I was younger. I called him up and he said come on.
Belly dumps are pretty easy work as well, kinda boring is the only thing that sucks.
I agree though, just keep looking and you will eventually find what you want if it's out there. Took me a while, I wanted local and when I found it well, it was less than stellar because it was too "corporate" so I kept looking until I found mom and pops which is what I was looking for to begin with.
A 379 with 8 inch straights and a 60" flat top helps too hahahaha. I'm overall happy with it, it will do until I go back to school in the fall. -
Don't confuse me.
Yes, you're lucky, I normally don't like people who give silly advice.
Oh man, I hate to disagree with people I like
but the guy's already gone through trucking school, so going to college now probably isn't what he's looking to do. Look on the bright side, if he gets into trucking now he'll really be happy when things take an up turn.
To the guy looking for a team oriented company may I suggest U.S. Xpress. I worked for them 4yrs ago and they did hire newbies and they loved their teams. They run all automatic/auto shift trucks. Not sure how you feel about those. -
Bwahahahahahahahahahaah. Nice comeback lol.
I know he's already been to driving school, that's why I suggested Conway Truckload as a good alternative.
However, a mechanical engineer will still make more money in a bad economy than a truck driver will in a good economy so this fall, it's back to school for me
If I had bought my own truck, I would most likely enjoy it a lot more because it's a lot more involved and requires a lot of thought and planning on your part to succeed. As it is though running someone's equipment, I just find it a bit boring and without a challenge I get tired of something very quick. -
I made $100,000 a year as a flilght test mechanic for McDonnell Douglas when they were in the business. Go get an A&P Certificate from Spartan School of Aeronautics or Embry Riddle. They will have a shortage of Mechs in the nest few years.
-
I can't type either but A&P school did'nt teadch that. I retired early, bought a Peterbilt 379 from Dallas Pete and then bought a Transcraft spread axle flat with a side kit. That wsa great fun, leased on w/Watkins-Shepard and rand 130,000 mi/year.
-
I have 11 years of aviation maintenance experience from line trouble shooting to quality assurance/safety and functional test flights.
I am so sick of helicopters I can't even talk about them, that's why I got a CDL last year to get away from planes.
I am going to go ahead and get a degree though to go further, I just don't plan on doing it with planes unless it's design or R&D at Sikorsky. I would have stuck with it had I gotten a contract in Iraq with Blackwater but my but my call didn't come back until shortly after I started CDL school and I don't like to start things and not finish them so I turned it down and went on with this. -
lol what the hell state are you all in that you make 400 bucks a week? I make well over 1k a week driving an end dump locally, home every night five days a week. And i though my job sucked. Get away from the big companies they dont pay! Mexicans are taking overwolfen Thanks this.
