Just bought it and it runs well but I found a Tock Tock Tock under the rear valve cover of the N-14.
Not the main reason for pulling it though. Mechanic at our company shop told me to run an overhead on it and see if that fixes it.
If not he said bring it into the shop and he could run an injector cutout test on it to see if it could be an injector.
Worst case it could be a camshaft. It has 117500 all original except redone heads 50,000 ago about 5 years ago.Runs strong and doesn't smoke.
But I want to put a new clutch and tranny and motor mounts in it also along with rebuilding the tranny tower.
Thinking its just as easy to pull it. I have a heavy duty 12' tall gantry. The shop I was going to keep the truck in is about 8 inches short to get it in so pulling the motor would give me a nice warm place to pick away at it this winter.
That way I could strip all the accessories and other stuff off the engine and sandblast and paint them with industrial epoxy .
Along with the hood mounts and radiator supports , steering box and etc etc.
Than in the spring I would sandblast the frame and axle and epoxy it and run new air hoses along with new heater hoses and clean up the wiring.
The truck is all in good shape and has not been molested but has 21 year old parts and paint in the engine compartment .
Probably roll in some new bearings, but see no reason for a total liner replacement if it is not smoking and running well.
Maybe new input and output bearings and seals on the tranny while its out.
In the Sping put it all together along with new brake system and shocks along with new steers.
Thinking of pulling my engine out of my 97 International

How many miles? You typed 117,500
tommymonza Thanks this. -
While out; I would do new fuel lines and new battery to starter, and alternator cables too. New wiring harness’ if possible

I agree.
Looking at about 6-7 thousand to do everything I would like to do to it.
Brakes ,drums and chambers and air lines all the way around.
New steers and front shocks.
Clutch and clutch brake ,throw out. Rear engine seal.
Input and output bearing and tower in transmission .
Engine and transmission mounts.
Carrier bearing, possibly u- joints.
Rebuild fifth wheel. One new airbag.
Starter, batteries, and cables.
Heater hoses and belts.
Reseal steering box and check over hoses.
A lot of sandblasting and painting with epoxy
Probably should get a new injector harness. .
Anything else?

You can do as you wish but myself I would not pull an engine out unless I was going to do an out of frame rebuild or put a new engine in. I think that it is a lot more work to pull an engine out than to do repairs with it in the truck.
The clutch rear seal motor mounts and all that stuff can be done with the engine in the truck as well as putting bearings in.
As far as other things... check accessory Drive, change vibration damper, check fan and idler bearings, front motor mounts and check radiator mounts, clean/check plunger in oil pump, service/ clean oil cooler and replace thermostats belts and hoses. Also take a good look at your flywheel housing and make sure that it's not cracked. If you're putting a rear seal in you might as well put a front seal in also. That would also be the time to replace cover gaskets and oil lines.
With over 1 million miles on it that engine may run you for a long time. Then again, in a few hundred thousand miles you may be pulling the engine out again.
Just something to think about.
Good luck.Last edited: Oct 14, 2018

1 new airbag? WTF Lol. Might as well overhaul it while you got the Garage space. Much cheaper now than if stuck on road at the hands of Vampires
tommymonza Thanks this. -
It has 2 recent airbags and one new one. Needs one more.Rideandrepair Thanks this.

Sounds like you have made up your mind so just pull the motor and do it right or can you just pull the exhaust stacks to get it in the shop
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Sounds like a lotta fun...
Any Helpers??
Moe,Larry and Curly in the shop with you?Rideandrepair and tommymonza Thank this.
