Hi there we have a 2005 kenworth w900l with cat c15.

Prior to a recent safety the steering on the truck was awesome ...no wiggle play...let steering wheel go straight line.

At the safety due to a little play in the steering column when you rattle the steering wheel they insisted on replacing the entire steering column...u joints..bar etc and the link arm drivers side.

Now driving thre truck empty ..loaded..bobtail theres a constant feeling of having to twitch the steering wheel to keep the truck straight..like it's trying to veer off...left and right. Both me and my husband feel it..I'm not paranoid lol.

It's not pulling like when an alignment is off...weve had it aligned and rechecked in case this was the cause and that's ok.

The only thing left we can think off / the shop has suggested is the steering box needs replacing. That costs at least $1500 plus labour according to them but my argument is this was not an issue before they messed with it.

Any thoughts or ideas would be grestly appreciated before we spend out needleesly.

Sure sounds like not enough toe-in to me, but if you have had it checked then I am of no help.

Thanks..no I appreciate the input...they got the same guy to check it who did it there...I'm not 100% convinced by any of their work lol...will get ur independently checked..cheaper than steering box lol

It's not much help but if it worked like it should before they touched it it only seems to make sense it was something that they did.

Unless the steering box is worn out it can be adjusted. But you would feel a lot of play in the wheel if the steering box was worn out or needed adjustment.

Yea that's what I've argued with them. They test drive it says nothing wrong with it...they are a kw dealer aswell.

Yea weve actually driven a truck had the steering box broken in a wreck and they failed to notice or fix it initially when we were company drivers so know how it feels and it's not to that extent.

Just odd if its worn out it's right after they change things.

    Thanks

U-joints out of phase on steering shaft or binding gives a "knotty" feel to wheel and gives all kinds of weird feedback to the steering wheel.

Yokes should be in same plane on most steer shafts, Mack is an exception on some models. Here is a pic. images.png

Also need to make sure u-joints are not binding/ incorrect install. U-joints should move in all range of motion smooth with hardly any effort. Shaft will have to be removed to check.

    EWV Thanks this.
