How'd you end up with EPA2010 without DEF? Only engines available for my use are Volvo D13 and DD13, but DD13 is only with 2013 and later on that coach model. Otherwise maybe Series 60 14.0L EGR.
So if I buy a coach with C13 ACERT or Series 12.7L (or 14.0L) EGR and DPF, can I make that EPA2010?
Retrofit DEF for CARB?

Volvo didnt introduce DEF until the 2011 model year. My truck has a built date of 2009 and is an EPA2010 engine. How did that happen. I bought that way.
-
I remember vaguely that around that time enginebuilder were working with credits.
-
EPA 2010 was the introduction of Low NOX motors. For whatever reason Volvo was able to do that without DEF. It's like a 1 off motor since every other manufacturer was already doing DEF. Volvo starting with 2011 began using DEF to meet the Low NOX requirement.
Hopefully my information is accurate and I am going off of memory. But if I am wrong Sorry.Last edited: Dec 21, 2018

EPA Certifies 2010 Engines from Volvo, Mack Trucks
Some info on this topic. -
None of those engines came spec'd for EPA2010. Short answer.. No.
-
So which of these engines can be modified or already compliant with EPA 2010?
- C13 ACERT
- DD S60 12.7L
- DD S60 14.0L
- Volvo D13 EGR
- Volvo D13 SCR (DEF)
- DD13
-
Well 5 and 6 are already compliant now 4 can be but has to be verified on the engine
Nobody does that kind of work. I would imagine the work required to remap/reengineer motors would be very expensive. It would make more sense to buy a new piece of equipment and be done with it. -
Well, one can always choose not to run in CA. Now what happens if an out-of-state unit in interstate commerce enters CA without having a CARB-compliant engine, but with an engine that is not otherwise smoking or malfunctioning? Other than weigh stations, do they look up your IFTA IVDR and decode the VIN? Does the police chase you down and look into the engine compartment?

Does said engine still have the emissions it had when it left the factory?
