I am 39 yrs old and I just graduated with a dual A.S. degree in Civil Surveying(Land Surveying) and computer aided drafting and I have had real trouble finding work because of the economy. I owned my own vending machine biz for 11 years and sold it a little over a year ago when the economy went down hill. Before owning my own biz I worked in hotels and restaurants.
Anyhow I am thinking of taking the course in truck driving at my local vo -tech so I can get a license in that. However it looks from this board like truckers are having trouble to. When I owned my own biz I would put in 70 hrs a week. In other words I like working and hate being unemployed. I am not one to sit around watching TV All day.
If I got this license do you think it would be really hard to find work at this time since I would have no experience?

Yeah , you would have a real hard time . The number of applicants applying for jobs surpasses the number of job openings more and more . Have you tried applying to local excavating companies ? I had surveying knowledge and there was a shortage of people that knew how to read plans and set and read grade stakes . Construction is supposed to pick up . The Florida DOT will need more survey crewmen and inspectors . They have an opening for an entry level inspector now . https://jobs.myflorida.com/viewjob.html?optlink-view=view-335561&ERFormID=newjoblist&c=any

Hell with Orange Barrel season just days away and Obama stimulating my buttocks with every pothole and crack. I would think you could find something easier than an unemployed illegal immigrant in the road crews.

There isn't any jobs for newbies in trucking. Don't waste your money right now. Us guys with ten years experience are getting laid off, hours cut, or if you read my post in another thread getting pay cuts like I just did. If you go to truck driving school right now, odds are you are going to end up with no job and a big student loan bill. If you really must get into trucking, get with one of the companies that train drivers. Swift, Stevens Transport, or CREngland, and get on their waiting list. You'll go through their school, on their dime, in exchange for a year or two of indentured service to them. I wish I had positive words of encouragement, I really do. But it's just not there.

Thanks for the advice you have given me so far.

being in Fl multiplies the difficulty too (trust me LOL)
reefers and cars are about the only freight that comes OUT of Fl. even in good times -
Living in florida eliminates a lot of companies willing to hire you due to the lack of freight in that state.
