Ok here goes I'm new to trucking so until now I never really saw a need to have a CB in my daily life so bare with me. I bought the basic cobra 29 chrome edition just to have a cb. Now the company I drive for put me in a new 2009 int prostar and i hooked my cb to the factory coax. Its dual coax and has two fiberglass ant's. I know basic electricity and i have ohmeter voltmeter etc. First question is factory coax usually pretty good or do i need to ohm it out and check? My range is a couple miles right now and that isn't cuttin it. I know I should be able to hear conversations that im not able to hear. I just want a decent-good setup so I can have more than 2 or 3 miles warning for any bears or road hazards. I also followed the directions as far as tuning when I installed it.

Check the coax and antennas with a ohm meter, just to make sure nothing is shorted out, sometimes coax put in at the factory isnt put in right or its got pinched somewhere during the time the truck was being built. make sure where the antennas are in the brackets have the plastic washers and that everything is right, if not use your own coax and brackets and antennas if possible. other wise have a radio shop check it for you.

No I haven't I need to find a good reasonable cb shop. Im over the road so if you know of any good ones please do tell. How much does it usually cost to get it peaked and tuned?

I'd say around $ 20. There's a lot of shops around, everybody has their favorite.

IMHO, factory coax sucks. I refuse to use it. I would rather not have a radio, than to have to use the factory coax.
With that aside, you may have to use it. Be sure to get that radio checked out to make sure it's alligned properly on the transmit and the receive. Not knowing where your at, if you are anywhere near Midland Tx, I could do it for you, but odds are, your halfway across the country from me, lolGoverned Thanks this. -
Hey I appreciate it. I got it tuned and peaked out the guy said it was the factory 5 watts to he said near 50 watts now. He wasn't cheap and charged me like 50 bucks just for that took him like 5 minutes. I'm not one to complain so I forked it over. He didn't seem to concerned to help at all though. I asked him about antennaes and coax and all he wanted to do was sell me a radio. I bought two francis 4ft antennaes from him 20$ bux a pop and I didn't put them on till I was outta state...duh I shouldn't have done that. I put the antennaes on he sold me and my original swr according to my cb was like 1.4 or 1.5 jumped to over 3 when i put those on. I called him he said they could be bad antennaes. What's the odds of bad antennaes being in a supposedly new box? Oh I do go to Texas ocassionally. Oh btw is it better to run dual antennaes/ coax or one really good piece of coax and antennae. A fellow trucker told me two can interfere with each other.

Depends on what kind of truck, and trailer you pull. Flatbed, 1 antenna works great. Van works better with 2, as far apart as you can them.
50 watts out of your Cobra 29. I just don't understand why these so called radio techs wanna lie about stuff. 50 watts is just not going to happen out of a single final radio. PEP maybe, but not RMS -
Almost every truck stop will have a cb shop that can tune it for you.
