I know nothing of the circumstances of that photo. I have a shortcut to it on my desktop, and I look at it every so often to remind me how important safety is. It's a powerful image.

As a trainer, i do alot of late night driving. Ask most drivers hear, from the hours of 0300-0600 is the hardest time to stay awake, no matter how much sleep you get. Sometimes i stop, get something to drink, and walk around for 15 mins or so while i drink it, if that does not work, do everyone on the road a favor, shut it down, get some rest. I have never hauled anything worth my life or the public. If you need sleep and your dispatch gives you crap, the weather is always different all over the U.S. make something up, if there jerks to buy you an hour or so, Tell them its unsafe to drive, just don't make a habait out of it. Good dispatch that has driving expereince, most of the time will understand if you just tell them the truth and know how to take care of there drivers.

I get sleep, I just get tired when I drive at night. It doesn't matter how much sleep I get. I just wanted to know what tips keep you alert and lively when you are tired.

A serious answer, because I have that problem sometimes. I'll eat something crunchy, like chips, or hard candy...especially sour stuff like the warheads.... If that doesnt work for me, thats when I pull it over.

Listen to talk radio. It keeps your mind more engaged than music, and that will help keep you alert.

In listen to audiobooks by Graphic Audio. Nothing like the full experience of listening to the sound effects of a firefight or battle in a story you follow to wake you up at 4am...lol It really gets the imagination rolling as well as it's not just a single reader droning on putting you to sleep like mommy and daddy used to do when you was a child.

Why do you drive at night do you have to. To get youre load on time or is it because you choose to you never told us why. Roll youre window down and let the cold wind in.

If your a OTR driver you will have no choice but to drive at night. Lets say you have been out away for home for about 4-5 days, your 75 miles from your morning appointment and shut down from the hours of 1700-0300, your appointment is at 0600, you get there, get unloaded, its now 0800. You now call dispatch for a new load, your new load picks up at 2000 that night and is due at 0900 the next morning, now you have to sleep during the day to make your appointment the next morning. You just got up from a nights sleep 5 hours previous. Now your driving time has swung to "night shift" for how ever many days. Welcome to trucking.
