The family of Jason Rivenburg, the driver who was shot in the head as he waited in the cab of his truck to make a delivery 12 miles away, have started a campaign seeking a new law that would require truck stops to provide lighted, secure parking, and also require receivers to provide a secure place for driver to wait when early for deliveries.

They have created a website at: http://www.jhlrivenburg.com/

There is a link to their online petition from that site.

Some receivers keep banker's hours and the property is secured at night . How about requiring customers that don't allow parking to pay for a motel nearby ? They could get discounted room rates and avoid detention pay because they could call the driver to come when they are ready .

Actually I think every town ought to be required to provide and maintain a "Municipal Truck Parking" area that can be used by both truckers delivering or picking up in that town, and by drivers who live in that town and need a place to park their rigs while they are home. It should be well lit, have restroom facilities, and be on a regular police patrol route. It doesn't have to be right down town, but ideally it would be near a convenience store or a hotel and restaurant.

    Quit being so cynical!
There's some major problems out here that need changing and the only way they are going to get changed is if we do something about it!
Go sign the petition. Give us your ideas about how to fix the problem!
Apathy and sarcasm don't get anything accomplished.

How did the federal government get states to go along with seatbelt laws? They threatened to withhold federal funding from the states until they complied. If we can get enough support from legislators we can get them to do the same thing with sates that don't enact laws to provide us with safe places to park.

But nothing is going to happen if WE don't make it happen!!!!!!

Truckstops are private companies that survive on tight margins, they'll shut down before spending a dime.

Truck parking in metro areas? Dream on.

I agree with you about the truck stops, which is why I think we need to lean on government to supply the parking for us.

And as for truck parking in metro areas - why not, New York did it - You been to the Vince Lombardy Travel Plaza lately?

Or take the little town I live in for example... small town, maybe 25,000 people, and they have a municipal lot specifically for trucks, holds about 20 trucks. They even have signs directing truckers to it.

There is no way cities or even states will provide funding for sufficient security at parking anywhere . Parking in urban areas will attract thieves and prostitutes and will end when local residents complain about trash and urine bottles left in the parking areas .
