I'm in the #2 residential oil delivery industry and my old 1987 Ford cab has become unusable as a backup truck. Looking to upgrade but haven't bought anything since 2001 (Sterling Acterra). Any hints for getting the best price/financing on a new M2, or even something else? I have the tank from the old truck to transfer to the new. Any advice is much appreciated.

If you have the tank & pump to swap over and a shop to do it, that’s the bulk of the cost right there. Now you just need to figure out a wheelbase, engine/trans/rear gear set up and shop for the cheapest truck that fits your needs. What part of the Country are you in?

Yes, there is a shop somewhat local that can swap the old tank. Location is Suffolk County, New York. I was told by my mechanic to get Fa Freightliner M2. GVW is 33000 lbs. Wondering ways to find actual buying cost for trucks for leverage in negotiations.

There should be enough used trucks out there to make it a cheap move. New?

Doubt of you have wiggle room with negotiations.

If it was me, I wouldn’t get the M2. We had one, a 4x4 single rear axle that we hauled chemical totes on. It was an awful truck. The only time it moved was when all the other trucks were taken. I don’t remember the specs, but the pattern was so small, high RPM shifts. Going around a corner you felt like you would tip. Very basic, cheap, uncomfortable truck. Turn radius was the only good thing about it.

Why did you have a 4x4 for delivering totes? I imagine having a “live” front axle would mean it was more like a power company M2. No crap it drove like junk, that set up isn’t gonna be that road friendly.

I’ve driven a few M2’s never really had any issues. They drove well for what they are. They aren’t class 8 tractors with over 200” wheel bases. They are work trucks that serve their purpose well imo.

Edit: if i had the need for a straight job, the Frieghtliner would be my go to. And i’m not a Freightliner fan...not by any means.

Op, buying new and only needing one truck is going to leave you without much leverage to bargin with. I would go to several dealerships and shop around for the best deal. Then take the 2 best deals and start going back and forth. Make them fight for your business. Remind both dealers you have other trucks that need servicing as well. Lie to them, promise them your maintenance for all trucks. Tell them, you’ll also be replacing your other trucks over the next 2 years. So they think they aren’t selling one truck, but gaining a long term customer.

It’s a salesman job to make you believe his lies...it’s your job to make him believe your lies. Promise him the moon for a better deal.
Remember nothing you promise goes into writing, what he promises does. Lol. That’s your upper hand
