    Hey guys,

I've been researching which cell phone provider to go with when I start OTR. So far it looks like AT&T has the best overall coverage and they allow unlimited internet access, unlimited long distance and no roaming fees.

I don't want to pay for internet twice though so I've been looking into tethering my laptop to my cell phone. This sounded like the ideal solution but as I read further I found out that you have to hack your iphone to be able to do it and if AT&T catches you they will cancel your contract.

So my question is this: Does the tethering restriction only apply to the iphone or is that the same for all phones? Which phones can you tether without AT&T giving you the boot. Blackberry maybe?

A friend of mine uses his blackberry every once in a while to get internet.

If you were going to do so just remember the actual wireless card would be much much faster

I know it's not AT&T, but I tether my T-Mobile Dash to my laptop for internet (on it right now). It's only $20 extra pm. I think AT&T has too many rules. My dad has to pay $80 extra to run their 3G card. I can live with the slower EDGE network speed..

wow, all these terms make me feel like an ol' duffer! I have a lot to learn, this go-round.
edit: ok, I looked up the T-mobile dash and I see it's one a' them thar innynet tellyphones. So I deduce that a "tether" is a connection cable and you have to pay for it to work on a laptop or is that $20 for the internet for the phone?

    Skunk,
There are many ATT phones that you can tether. Look at their website and look at the phone specs. You'll want one with 3G. Then verify with Customer service that the phone can be tethered. Some phones come with the data connection cable, some don't. You can download the software for free from ATT. Their Uniimited (5Gb) DATA Connect Package is $60/mo. Make sure they give you the data connect and not a media connect package. I had that happen once and it took months to straighten out.

I don't know what tethering means... but we have At and t and its' endless net for 59 a month plus tax then we have att at home and we use the unity plan so now there is no long distance for hubby as long as the person he's calling is a ATT customer.

his phone bill is 59 a month and his net is 59 a month and i have all area calling at the hosue the whole thing tax and all is about 180 or so but we love it we can talk all day if we want and it's free.

Hi Red Fox, I'm not a lot younger than you at 50yo :biggrin_255:, I had the advantage of being in telecom for 23 years. (hence my name here). The tether is a usb cable from the phone to the laptop.

The $20 extra gives me 3 benefits: internet on the phone itself, internet on the laptop (when tethered) and free access to wifi at any T-Mobile hotspot (Starbucks for example). It's a great deal and has been my only internet for 1.5 years now. Not the fastest when on the EDGE network, but very workable..

i had T-mobile dash bought it 2 years ago.that thing was a piece of crap. took GREAT pics. but it wa like a #### "beta" version then i guess? volume touch strip was wacky. alarm would go off at all hours if you did not "cancel" it correctly. ETC.

Heh, sorry for the techno-babble. :biggrin_25525:

As Telcobilly said a tether is a cable that allows your laptop to use your cell phones internet. The nice thing about a tether is that you only pay for the internet once but you can use it on both your phone and your laptop. Also some providers have unlimited internet via cell phones but charge per megabyte if you use a card. The phone internet is slower however.

    Gabriel3,
Your message eluded that AT&T's unlimited internet access is really limited to 5gb, is this true? If so I may have to reconsider whether I'll get the data option with them on my phone or if I'll just get a faster PCMCIA modem.

    Telcobilly,
How is T-Mobile's coverage for OTR? They are my current provider but I was thinking of switching away since they apply roaming charges even against MyFavs, nights and weekends. If their coverage is good enough though I may stick with them, I have a deep hatred for Cingular (AT&T's predecessor and infrastructure.) They tend to have a lot of "billing errors", in their favor of course.

when i had T-mobile their coverage was excellent when on/near the interstate. when on backroads and out west it went to cingular towers and others. they didn't USED to charge roaming for those areas.
i switched because tm's signal was HORRIBLE at my home (no landline ## SPRINT!)
