Lumpers... I don't understand...

not the ones i dealt with in the beginning. they became organized a few years later.

i dealt with cigarette loads at various warehouses up here in new england, never any food warehouses.

so NO, they have not always been organized.

 

They took you money EVERY time. You don’t get much more organized than that. Unless they start charging you for health care

 

That's one reason I learned to ask potential employers if they hold a drop hook account with walmart back in the 90's and I am blessed to have found one that does. (Or did rather) go in, drop, 10 minutes later leave with empty. No 60 dollars, no comchecks no small rooms to sit in and so on. No loud abusive staff and such issues either.

 

we got "truck money" back then. it was $200 cash..when we spent any amount, we turned in the receipts, and that money was reimbursed. back then, there was no E-Z-Pass, so we had to pay tolls.

we could not keep the lumper money, it was all accounted for.

when we quit, we either turned in that money (or any balance after using some for road expense) or we kept it, and the company simply deducted that amount from our last paycheck.

if your company advances you any "truck money", you have to account for it with receipts.

 

it's the way those cigarette warehouse worked. we could unload ourselves, for peanuts, or pay them..we had a choice.

i choose to save my back, and not sweat.

 

I’m with you Just yanking your chain. I unloaded in my younger years when it was part of my job. But hell will freeze over before I fingerprint a load now.

This company is the same. Yes, we’ll pay you minimum wage to unload. Or pay the lumper fee. Your choice.

200+ would just be the GWB tolls for a week by the time I got through with it. 10.00 at a time give or take.

Hunts had tolls as well. (Lumpers too. Dishonest ones as well....)
And the obligatory ### chewing they would give you when you nuke the truck money on a one way trip to Chicago via the toll roads.

 

back then, to cross the GWB, was only $30.

the full lenght of the NJTP was about $20 (?) if i recall.

the Delaware Memorial Bridge was about $5.00(?)

i could run my 3 trips from MA to Richmond, VA on less than that $200, and the lumpers fee was still covered.

i'd have enough money to get back to Richmond the following monday morning, and get my reimbursement monies.

what "might" have killed me, was when everything was working great, i'd be able to squeeze in a 4th weekly trip to Richmond...then i'd have to hope no lumper fee's, on the return trip. which then, i'd drop the trailer in the yard, for a local guy to take Monday.
