Just bought a 1988 Pete 377 with a Cummins Big Cam 4 motor in it. I've been doing some reading, and come up with the conclusion that these motors are prone to overheating. Is this correct? If so, what can I do, to help solve the problem, if it occurs?
    thanks,
    Jim

If I remember correctly, the IV are the ones with the low flow cooling system. These engines take a special radiator and different sealing rings in the water manifold. This engine is a little before my time, but I believe if you keep these in check...it should cool ok. Just like any other engine, make sure the temp gauge and t-stat is working properly, cooling system filled with coolant, and the cooling package cleared of dirt and debris.

Owner told me he just put in a new radiator and top tank, so hopefully he replaced it with the correct one.
    thanks,

the rads have a silicone baffle in them in the bottom tank that is the most common issue. but aslong as that is ok and your thermostats are good you should have no issues

If everything is in good shape like they said in the post above, you shouldn't have any problem, we never had problems until we turned fuel to them. The water temp would go up on short hills in Louisiana then.

Seemed like with my old International cabover I had, with the cat 3406 or 3408(can't remember which it was), it tended to get hot during wheat harvest. Of couse all that wheat chaff flying around wasnt good on it. It we cleaned the radiator really well at the start of wheat harvest, we didnt have too much trouble. But, we still needed to stop and clean it out occasionally, or engine would shut down before we knew it!(especially going with the wind, down dusty roads)

As a mechanic for International for 3yrs, the most common overheating problem was the silicon gasket in the radiator. The problem is it comes apart and ends up at the thermostat. In the BC4 motors, there was a wire screen in the thermo housing that clogs up with this silicone. Hence, not enough water flow. Other than that, don't remember much bad about the BC4. Keep an eye on that and you should be OK
