Could anyone out there give me an idea as to what is involved in having your exhaust manifold, and turbo housing coated?
(1) What sort of prep on used parts prior to coating?
(2) Is the ceramic applied just on the exterior?
(3) How thick of a coating is it?
Any other tips would be appreciated!
My new neighbor walked over to introduce himself, and as we were talking, he mentioned he works for some company that does ceramic coating- for industrial plants. "Ceramic coating? lets walk over to that Kenworth, I want to show you something!" He stated that employees were always coating headers and stuff for their four wheelers, and wouldn't be a problem coating my exhaust manifold, and turbo housing, HOWEVER, he doesn't know much on the prep of the used parts before the coating is applied. He's going to check, but asked if I would also inquire, in order to assure a quality job.

have had several sets of headers coated inside and out.all were used. not sure about prep. coating is about as thick as coat of paint. it can be scratched with sharp object but will not come off.

Ceramic alone will not do anything for your performance. Ceramic is good up to 1500 part temp and is a little thinner than a coat a paint. All the ceramic will do for your manifold is dissipate heat and drop under hood temps. For a good application I could get a hold of Full Tilt or Bruce and Pittsburgh power. The manifolds are flowing a minimum of 150 CFM more and coated inside and out in house.

Fellow said they would shoot a coating of about 6 mils, but apparently can only do so on the exterior, guess it wouldn't be much of a gain.

What kind of manifold are they using? Are they PDI Manifolds?

I have to disagree,all things being equal the coating will help keep the heat from being absorbed into the casting therefor transferring it to the turbo more efficiantly and this would result in some amout of a gain however small it might be.

If your question was to me, the place this fellow works does strictly industrial plant work, however, they allow employees to coat their own goodies, which is why I started this thread, he, nor I has any knowledge about manifold and turbo housing coating.

So if I understand you correctly, the coating would have to be on the inside of the manifold/turbo housing, to be of any benefit?

You do the inside for function and the outside for decoration.There is one concern about the inside being coated and it would be that if any of the coating comes off it could be the end of your turbo,so you would want the coating to be done correctlly.FYI I have my manifold done inside and out.

The coating if done right will not come off from the inside and it is so thin that I will not hurt your turbo. Do not coat the inside of your turbo because it will ruin the clearance for the fins unless you have a turbo guy with a dyno that can shave them down. Full Tilt coats all of their own manifolds in shop and has never had a problem with the coating flaking inside the manifold and doing damage. They will actually warranty the coating if there are any problems with the coating.
