If you are running farm tags then you can run off road fuel. As long as you are not for hire.
Did I make a mistake?

I wish I could pick up a truck around that price to use around Texas hauling flatbed. -
You cannot use off road fuel in anything that runs on the public roads,, only farm tractors like john deere and case etc can use off road fuel,,not even a deisel pickup can use off raod fuel if driven on public roads,, the IRS and dot can dip the tanks even on a pickup, its been done, then comes the fine, so number 2 deisel only.

Picked her up last night and got her home. Not without issues though......mostly my issues.
The truck itself is as good as it appears. Keep in mind I bought it sight unseen. Very clean and great rubber. I LOVE IT!
So now for the trip home.....about 60 miles. keep in mind I have NEVER driven a semi before.
Starts right up and I play around with the getting the air up to pressure. My wife and 6 month old boy is with me and they are going to follow me. We have about 20 miles of two lane to travel to the freeway and then 25 miles of freeway travel before getting back on a two lane for the last leg.
I study the gears a bit and decide to head out. Pull out of the lot and go to shift.....dam....can't find the next gear. I didn't fight it and just pulled to the side of the of the road and stopped. Grabbed a gear and back off we went. Took it slow....mainly because I was afraid that everytime I went to shift that I would not be able to find a gear. Come to stop light and had to make a right turn. Had to downshift to make the turn and once again I could not find the gear so i coasted around the turn and pulled to the side again. Grabbed a gear and off we went again. Low on fuel so I stopped at a station that was not a truck stop but it did have diesel pumps off to the side. This is where the fun began.
Dam caps are locked and I can't get fuel in her. Place I got her is now closed so I search the cab looking for the key. Can't find it and the ignition key is not the right one. The wife has to feed the baby so I stand and wait hoping maybe a real driver shows up. 5 minutes later I am in luck and run into a very nice guy who tries to help me out. No luck but he does give me some pointers for shifting. Works out well and aside from not getting fuel and being on "E" i cruise around the lot practicing shifting a bit and decide to head out. I now am able to up shift and get up to speed so I am no longer worried about getting on the freeway.
We hop on the freeway and away we go. Now I am sweating becasue the fuel gage is very low.....below the "E". So I call a buddy of mine who is a locksmith and ask if he can meet me at the exit I need to get off of and pick the locks so I can get fuel to make it home. He says sure.........10 minutes later I am at the station and notice that the drivers rear tank does not have a lock. I am in business and call my buddy to tell him I don't need him. I put $100 in her and head for home.
Only problem is that fuel gage did not move, despite the $100.
Get home and my buddy pulls in right behind me to check the rig out. I explain the fuel thing and where I put the fuel. He just smiles and say uh.....Tom, you just put diesel in the hydraulic tank!.....What? What hydraulic tank? Turns out this unit has a wet line........so I am now out the $100 and I gotta drain the hydraulic tank.
Other than that, this truck is AWSOME! I still have some work to done on upshifting. I have no problems running through the H pattern but when i have to toggle and start the gear pattern over again I can't do it. I managed to get home by splitting the gears....something that trucker at the first fuel stop showed me. Downshifting......well lets just so I failed to downshift and grab a gear a single time.
Back to the wet line.......Can I sell this? I never will haul anything that needs this?
Thanks guys...... -

Good job, sounds like it wasn't to bad. One thing, you know how low your fuel gauge will go before you run out. You might change your fuel filters now as you probably sucked up the trash from the bottom of the tanks. Congrats on getting home safely. Keep us posted.

Pretend your flywheel is 600 lbs. That will help you understand that the motor doesn't rev up and down like a small gas engine, and will help time your shifts. It's all about taking it slow and relaxing. Watch some Utube videos on the web and that will help, although I notice trucks shift a bit faster than they used to when I was driving.
I'll be finding out soon enough myself, now I got a pre-hire and passed the DOT phys.
There ought to be some kind of use for $100 worth of hydraulic diesel fuel I bet. -
Haven't had the chance to drive the new truck too much. But last night I had to run it over to the shop to have the brake lights checked out. I think there is something wrong with the switch or something along those lines as neither brake light works but both turns and tailights work.
Anyway, with the wife following me in the car we head out. This being a 13 speed, I noticed when I drive her home I could start out in 5th gear with no problem. But given that I want to try to practice the shifting, I decide to start out in 1st gear. Had no real issues other than I was kind of jerky but I did find the gear I wanted when I wanted it. Was even able to downshift 25% of the time which is far better than the trip home when I had to stop to grab a lower gear.
All in all, getting better with her though. I am now on the lookout for a 48' or 53' drop deck van trailer to convert for the horses.
I also am putting a wood deck on the back of the truck to haul round bales of hay. I will complete this project this weekend and update with pictures. I should be able to put 6 rounds on the bed and with 4 bolts and the skid loader unload the bed and hook the trailer up.
Gotta get my cdl soon as well as we will be travelling out of state for horse shoes etc. Been reading up on that but one question that I have is if you get to use a pre trip checklist or do you have to memorize everything that you must do? Passing the test appears to be more related to what mood the tester that day than anything else.....assuming you don't crash or run over anything. But I have seen where guys have missed every downshift and passed and others than swerved a bit with the trailer and failed.
