So im driving a eaton 10spd and should know this but is it okay to crawl in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and maybe 4th and 5th. I know some trucks have dedicated crawler gears and in rush hour traffic in the automatic i was able to crawl in gears 1 through 5 and no higher. If i let it wind down to about idle the truck would crawl forward without throttle in gears 1 through 5. Today i tried it on the 10spd and let it wind down to about idle in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th worrying that the truck would stall and it never did, but still am i abusing this truck? I know the power band is mostly between 1000 and 1500 rpms but is this okay in those lower gears or do i need to stop this? Even in 1st gear in stop n go traffic i can get below 1000 rpms if im going slow enough. So some one please give me some input.
Eaton 10spd. Crawler gears?

Not A problem. There is no issues I can think of that would cause any effect.
CruzControhl Thanks this. -
It's fine.
CruzControhl and stwik Thank this. -
In cdl school they do whats called dry shifting which is teaching the students how to shift 1st thru 5th gears without giving any throttle , only time u are allowed to give it fuel is when u downshifting. Trucks never had a problem with itCruzControhl Thanks this.

There is no such crawler gear.
You can pick a gear, get the engine into proper RPM range low torque and proceed all day. Provided your transmission can cool itself and not be overloaded or other issues.
Things become very serious when you are on say a 24% upgrade for three miles in the lowest gear. You will find it takes over a hour to get to the top and your temperatures will be extreme all the way up. But your chances of encountering such a grade that makes wheels spin less than a baby crawling speed is very unlikely.CruzControhl Thanks this. -
Drove a nine speed with a C13 CAT and do it all day long . . . From a dead stop always fully engage clutch prior to applying throttle - just easier on everything overall.
Loaded & stopped on an incline think ya gonna stall it? USE A LOWER GEAR aka "deep reduction"!
lol Just don't forget to switch back before you try to switch up! Is yours really a 15speed (with a dogleg shift between 13 and 14)?Last edited: Jan 26, 2019

I had a CAT 936 four wheeled front end loader with a 7 yard bucket. It takes a minute for that machine to "Dig in" at the transmission when you sink that bucket into the rock-pile. And another minute to transfer the strength to the hydraulics that now must begin to lift that rock. That little kitty in the rear section has to divide the work between lifting or moving and if you tried to do both, it will do it for you but slowly. The last thing you needed to do is rush either function.

Nope just a 10 hi and low range...reverse also has high and low

I can wait to encounter sone serious hills. I think the most ive seen is 7 or 8% grades. I want to experience the rockys or out west.
