Get a company that provides housing, you don't want to try and sleep in your car. Texas is to hot and if north Dakota catches you they'll run you off with tickets. I'd start out hauling fresh water or sand. Check out Craigslist. But housing is a must.

Came to the patch with wet ink on my CDL 2 years ago. Slept in my truck and had a job with housing in 4 days hauling produced water.

Cool. I have tanker endorsement but not hazmat. I know its best to get hazmat but the whole process seems annoying. You think just cdl with tanker I should be good?

Get on Indeed.com before you come. I posted a resume last June on Indeed.com and got a phone call on 10 minutes on a Friday. Was in a truck hauling crude the next week.
Study for the hazmat and take the test. I got my background check in 3 weeks. It definitely opens up more opportunities.

Did you go with your hazmat endorsement??

I posted my resume on indeed and applied to about ten jobs there but so far no luck. I'm going to a job fair Tuesday in Midland .Hopefully that'll work out

Don't get your hazmat before you come to Texas. Your cdl will transfer right over but you would have to do the hazmat part over as the haz endorsement would not transfer. Better to just pay for the background check/ fingerprinting once. But do get the hazmat endorsement when you transfer your license. You will be better off.

I was in texas when I got my CDL. I got hired with a paper license showing I had passed the testing and waiting on the results of the background check.
I didn't need hazmat to haul produced water tho.

Maybe the best thing to do is figure out which place has the nicest weather and which place is the place where everybody wants to be and that's the place that will have the lowest rates.
Then look at the place that's the most miserable that nobody wants to be and that's where you should find the highest rates due to driver shortages since nobody wants to be there.
