    Thank you for that info. In right to work states, you can be fired for any reason with or without cause. Look that up.

    Nope. You are thinking of "At Will" state, which all states are btw.

    Now some have more or less protection when, for example, whistle blowing. Some have exemptions to hold the employer to any contract, including an employee handbook if they state they can only fire for cause.

    Basically unless you are a protected class (race, age, etc) or there is a contract in effect, the employer can fire for any reason or no reason. Heck even the protected class can be, but the employer might have to defend the firing.

    At-will == Fire at any time for any reason.
    Right to Work == Do not have to join a union to work at a union shop.
    Look that up.....

    I'm not a flatbedder, but I agree with you! If a driver is unsure about load containment/straps etc. he had better ask some questions!!
    We have the same problems here in the tanker world, some companies have marginal training and a driver screws up not knowing his trailer.
    I thought CHAINS were mandatory for steel coils???

    The sad thing is, the op has been here since 2010. As evidenced by a current thread in the flatbedder section, we have some awesome people here willing to help others with securement issues. ALl he had to do was ask.

    No, the op was being lazy. Heck he even stated he didn't get paid enough to do a good job. Just the bare minimum time, whatever the costs to others lively hood.
    I hope the op will take this as a wake up call and realise he needs to make sure the load is secured. If he doesn't like the pay go elsewhere, back to van, etc. Don't skirt securement because the compasantion isn't enough.

    How does a flatbed company not have testing/training on load securement during orientation?

    Actually that's a pic of an old volvo truck I used to own. The company trucks are not volvoes worse internationals lol.

    Yes I understand the gravity of the incident and the potential that could've taken place.

    I will check out the resources you and others mentioned on load securement.

    I don't know were you got the idea that I didn't feel responsible because of course I do. Only an arrogant moron would not feel responsible in a situation like this, but to be perfectly honest I felt like I did everything I could to secure it because I didn't know any better. Not that I'm saying ignorance is an excuse because it's not as you stated.

    Yes there is more learning to do and there always will be. I think that's called life or something along those lines lol.

    I'm not a slacker who just does the bare minimum. I'm the type of guy that goes the extra mile even though he's not being paid to do it. The type of guy who get's out and helps another driver fold up his tarp. The guy who gets out and shuts the gate behind him even though there's plenty of others around to do it.

    Yes I've learned quit a bit through not only the incident but through the responses on this forum including yours. I'm not looking for slack either. but to say that I'm the only one responsible is like saying the company is the only one responsible for not supplying proper training..

    What am I going to do? Exactly what everybody is suggesting wait it out use the week to get stuff around the house done. Whatever happens I will be looking for another job as I always do. I would have left a long time ago if I felt there was something better in my area.

    I've been driving long enough to realize the grass is rarely greener on the other side of the fence. Kinda what flavor of crap sandwich do you like kinda deal lol..

    Examples of some jobs in this area are drive a class B cement truck, run ltl doctor pepper truck with 15-20 stops a day, garbage truck, gravel truck making 14 dollars an hour, gas tanker truck, class A cement tractor truck with blower going back and forth same route everyday sort of thing again making barely 15 dollars an hour.

    It may be time for me to get my own truck and lease on with a local gig running gravel dump trailer or something along those lines. It's long and irregular hours as pretty much all trucking jobs are but the pay is good.

    I don't know if I had a way to do something else entirely and still be able to support my family I'd do it. This trucking thing continues to get more difficult to navigate, but maybe again that's just life...

    "right to work" also means you have the right to work but we have the right to fire you..No reasons needed
