Buying a used glider

But still a true statement with some of them I've seen for sale. Although what they are asking and what the actual sale price is may be a different story.

 

Could buy an older truck that you know needs work and have enough extra after the purchase to go threw the whole thing right away, then you know exactly what you have.

 

Buy a 90s or early 2000s that's been overhauled pretty recently and is nice shape yet. Then when you retire you take that truck and have it built into a nice motorhome, that's what I'd do but I'm nuts in the head.

 

Very simple reason if you think about it from a fleet owners standpoint ... He has company drivers in them and a new truck that’s dummy proof will blow a S60 away on fuel mileage .. a good driver can match or exceed the economy of a new truck but a avgerage to poor driver won’t .. PS company drivers want the latest models also

 

With glider kit truck worst case scenario you could spend 10k for overhaul. But with emission truck 10k is just one time replacing those filters. Then over 20 sensors for emission system and all other electric problems nobody can solve. I dont think mpg is much better with emission truck also. Thanks to this forum I bought my glider kit 2 years ago. mpg 7.5 mostly heavy.

 

If it's a cat you'll spend 10k just on parts pretty easily. But yea an overhaul is about all your gonna have to worry about on a used glider.

 

Normally a glider can be put together for a lot less than new. Likewise, resale normally would be lower. Given the new reasons for building gliders, exploited by some, Prices are too high. It all depends on what you want. Trucks are all overpriced IMO. I’d buy a used glider w/ s60 If history looked good, condition and price was right.

 

All trucks break down. A glider is just much cheaper and easier to work on when it does, which ironically is much less than most emission trucks. Of course there are advantages to emission trucks such as knowing you aren't polluting the air, knowing the Californians appreciate you, and not getting black soot in your pipes or on your trailer....umm did I miss any???

 

Well there's a couple of things to think about.

Gliders fall into a similar category as pre ELD trucks. They are more expensive than comprable trucks. Plus the emissions and all that nonsense is just problematic and expensive and the engine to rebuild is very expensive from what I understand.

If you found a glider with five hundred thousand miles on it that you had oil samples and you had a mechanic go over I don't see any reason why you should be afraid of that. However, you need to have the money in case you need to set it rears or in case the engine needs to be rebuilt or any major problems. But the good news is if you get one with a series 60 that really is like the most dependable inexpensive to rebuild of all the computerized engines. Those emission engines have a piece in the exhaust that if that goes bad that in and of itself can cost you $8,000. That's absolutely insane.

Why would a person sell or trade a glider with 500 thousand miles on it? Maybe at 500,000 miles he trades them in and buys a brand new glider. There are a bazillion reasons why people sell trucks.

I would think you would definitely be better off with a glider.
