Hello everyone, a quick background on myself, I am a hard worker, late 30's guy from TN, I've been operating heavy equipment for the last 20+ years (track-hoe, dozer, etc) and have been around trucks most of my adult life. I have loaded and secured lots of flatbed or low-boy type loads throughout my life and have driven some, but definitely not a professional driver, just drive on the job site and when it's a have to situation. I hold a class A permit. After recently being laid off and also getting older and tired of working in the weather almost all of the time, and the tick bites etc, I have decided that it's time I finally become a truck driver. I love to travel. In fact, the job I was recently laid off from I traveled anywhere from 500-1000 miles at the beginning of the week to wherever we were working, in a company truck. Although it was not a CDL truck, I have over 400k accident and ticket free miles with them, my driving record is clean, and im not worried at all about any kind of drug test. I'm just wanting good, honest opinions on decent companies that a guy like me could start with. Preferably one with their own CDL training program, and ideally a orogprothat pays a decent wage for that time. I'm open to anything van/flatbed/tanker, would like to find a decent company to help me get going and decent home time for my location which is in westen TN, approx 40 miles off of I-40 between nashNashv and Memphis. I have a wife and two kids, my most recent jobs of 4.5 years I had to travel and worked 8 on, 6 off. I know trucking will be different, and especially being a new guy with no seniority, but ill sacrifice a few months to a year to get me in a better position for home time or to a better company. So I guess my biggest question is what companies do you guys suggest as far as best paid training and possible home time for my area. Thanks guys!

What part of Tenn. are you located. Major cities nearby.
Do you WANT otr, or is local ok too.
OTR is NOT required by many local companies. Some do, but many don't.

This is a HIGHLY insurance driven field and very few OTR companies are going to see you as anything more than a newby still wet behind the ears.

Yes, Millis Transfer is a decent dry van company.
I think I'd put Millis Transfer at the top of the list.

Maverick Transportation and TMC both pay well for flatbed work.
Maverick trains in Arkansas and TMC trains in Des Moines.
Meals & lodging provided at both places plus a bus ticket to get there.

Mister G, I'm still wet behind the ears after almost 20 years with a bug truck. Lol!! As far as a company, believe it or not. Schneider National is who I would look at to start. They have a yard right there in West Memphis. I purchased my first truck thru them back in 2002. I have a close call of mine that is still with them. I think maybe 14 years there now. For flatbed, ATS Specialized all the way. Great opportunities with them and they treat folks right. I'd have 14 years with them now. I only left because of my home time on the blades. My fault on that one. Good luck on whatever you choose. Get as much information as you can.

Do a year with any of the above, then switch to Estes Express in Jackson, TN and make about $80K+ there with great benefits.
You can also switch to Milan Supply Chain Solutions in Milan, TN. Maybe contact them now and ask if they pay for cdl school. They used to pay for it.
