I was trying not to do a mass application, I put in at mabes and Cargo Transporters, I want to do otr. Im on the va nc line, closer to Danville, Danville has quite a few companies on that side, but I wasn't wanting to pay 2 state tax. Was also thinking I may drive dump truck for a few months just to get something on paper. I will try jcc, and a couple others..Thanks bud, you've been a BIG help!

JCC is Johnston Community College. Has a great truck driver training school

You have several auto part plants up there don’t you?

You only pay state tax to the state of your domicile.

I give this company suggestion with the understanding that it's just a start to your career. I worked for these guys back in 2012-2013. There are few companies that will hire you without decent employment history showing stability. There is one company out of Rock Hill, SC that will give you a chance provided that you:

    • Have a High School Education or Equivalent
    • Are At Least 23 Years of Age
    • Have a full Class A Commercial Driver’s License
    • Clear and Current (Within 30 Days) Motor Vehicle Registration (MVR) History – No DUIs and No More Than 5 Minor Violations Within the Past 5 Years
    • No More than 1 Chargeable Accident in the Past 5 Years (Including Violations Received in Personal Vehicle)
    • Available and Physically Fit for Long Haul Forced Dispatch (Long Form DOT Physical Within Past 6 Months)
    • Pass Drug Screening
    • No Major Violations in the Past 5 Years
I will not sugar-coat this company in any way. The biggest pro of Carolina Cargo is they will give you plenty of seat time. Solo driving is not an option. The pay is very low at about $0.22cpm split (with the ability to earn various performance, safety and fuel bonuses). Still, that's a pretty low pay, but the trade-off is that you get to drive a tractor-trailer professionally over-the-road and gain experience.

Carolina Cargo operates expedited, coast-to-coast freight, mostly Tupperware and other Southern freight that can go on a reefer trailer headed to California, mostly. They gauge your productivity on "turns". A turn is running one load from the east coast to the west coast and back. 3 round trips, gets you 5 days off.

The biggest con of this company, aside from the really low pay, is that they micro-manage your fuel stops and your route, and that you must run teams. First Seat and Second Seat designations are genuine at Carolina Cargo. When you first start, you will go on your first 3 turns with a trainer, after which you will be assigned to your permanent truck with another driver. Getting First Seat takes a little while, but it's not that hard nor will it take very long.

They mostly operate automatic Peterbilt 579s. They're governed to 65mph, and have opti-idle, with no APU or Bunk Heater, but they have no issues getting you hotels in inclement weather or giving you the opti-idle over-ride proceedure.

This company is a good choice to get a good year of experience under your belt. Not the best. Not the worst, but better than CRST, Swift or CR England.
