I’ll keep rolling then, and keep an eye on it. How difficult is it to replace just that bearing? I’m very able to do jobs like that if there’s no special tools or know how for the work. Is it as simple as pulling the bearing, and races then slamming a new one in?

Please dont mistake the following for me calling you incapable.

This is a very detailed procedure, especially getting the back box in and out in chassis. If you haven't been inside one of these the process can be quite frustrating and you should have atleast an experienced hand by your side the first go round. You can really screw things up in there if you dont know what your doing.

That being said, with the right service information and tools. It's just nuts and bolts.

I’ll consider that. The last thing I want to do is screw it up more than it already is. I did put new injector cups and o-rings in the engine by myself which was pretty involved. Not sure how those would rate by comparison.

When the back box is removed in the truck it can be aggravating to get the gears timed properly which can destroy it quickly if not done properly.

Something I should have mentioned was it was not loose when I was greasing it last time. It had to have happened within the last few thousand miles.

That’s about the same amount of play I have. Same issue it came up suddenly within 300 k after installling re man trans. I also had ran a while with a bad yoke, posibbly causing it. However it’s been years and 700 k + miles and hasn’t gotten worse. More than 1 grease tech has told me they see much worse all the time. Labor for trans was 8 hrs. ( both times ). 1 st time included changing bell housing, 2 Nd time included replacing and torque bolts for bell housing. First install/ repair bill $800 was refunded thankfully. I’m soon doing a new clutch, and plan on running the trans till it goes bed.

I’m really hesitant to run it. The shop I took it to get their opinion said it’s running on borrowed time, and very close to having a bad day. The last thing I want is to lose it while under a load 500 miles from home.

The rear bearing is a preset double tappered bearing and you would need to remove the Aux section and do full tear down to replace the bearing

Decided to look at it myself, and I think the nut loosened up. There was fresh rust dust around the base of the nut. Was pretty easy to loosen it, so I oiled the threads and retorqued it to 475 ft lbs.

Locktite old nut or replace the nut with new and torque it as tight as your biggest air wrench will go.

Oiled nut will loosen again for sure.
