Actually some companies do have a problem with it.
I won't name names. But they'll tell you straight up during orientaion. "If you have 1 hour or more left, you are required to board for a load."
Refusal to do so, will result in a day being docked from your hometime.
As far as harrassment from law enforcement. I've never had an issue with that.
Are you attacked for 34hour restarts?

Gives a whole new definition to "log book".
Red Fox Thanks this. -
i see someone else that went to that school, hows jerry lol
-
Quite possibly that instructor represents those same companies that "require" two log books......
-
Another reason many of us never go to CA.
-
Well Werner got on my behind all the time when we 34 restarted, they HATED to have a team down that long and #####ed and moaned and cried and kicked and stamped and sent unhappy qualcomm and cell phone messages about it. I'd rather sit 34 then sit 12 here 10 here 8 here fighting the 70 hour.
So yes some companies are big babies about it. BUT DOT on the other hand they didnt care. -
Probably what happened............ CA got short of money. Begged more of it off the feds, feds told em to like the new ruling or go without the coin. Now CA likes the ruling. -
Put the names out there, there is nothing wrong with drivers knowing who is going to abuse them a head of time.
On the other hand, when I was OTR O/O I would often load on a friday afternoon (almost every week) knowing I was going to pull a 34 reset either that night or saturday night. -
I would make sure he is stating the right question etc. He could be implying that most will not need to reset. Since the downturn in the economy and freight I have only needed a restart a few times because I am not maxing my hours as I was prior to December of last year. What I mean is you may have enought time in between hauls to get a reset or never max your 70 hours in 8 days. I have needed a restart a few times and think that if he is claiming DOT officials dont like you using it, then he is definately under educated in the subject matter. Get pulled over for a violation on hours and see just how quickly a DOT officer will red tag you for 34 hours (forcing you into a reset) and then dig deep into your pockets for your mistake.
It's like this, the best advice given to me 11 years ago was to take about 90% of everything you are told and chalk it up to personal ego (that of the informant). If you have questions on law, look it up in your little green book, it is a wealth of info and pretty straight forward. If you have questions on understanding a topic then ask away, you will get many different opinions of its interpretation, and remember interpretation is 90% of the law. I have done personal experiments in the past on some subjects and asked different officials (who are supposed to be well versed in the matter) to only get varying ideals on its exact maning but in the end, my own interpretation was close enough to keep me out of trouble.
Good luck to you and your endeavor. -
My experience has also been the opposite, people not knowledgeable of HOS complain if you can't show a reset, it makes it hard for them to understand you are not out of hours.
The union places don't usually like the restart because it allows someone to work more hours, but only in special circumstances. The places I'm talking about run regular routes and day cabs. I occasionally ended up picking up a load at one of those places to deliver, by the way, they could and did screw you up waiting way past time for a hot load that needed to be driven in the hours before dawn. I still hate that.
